Delivery drones may use cameras and other sensors to navigate, avoid obstacles and aircraft, and choose a safe place to land or deliver a package. Depending on the aircraft and operator, those sensors could detect people, animals, vehicles, buildings, terrain, or vegetation. That does not, by itself, establish that a person is watching live video or that images are stored. Recording, retention, and sharing practices vary by operator and operation.
What do delivery drone cameras record?
A camera can gather visual information about the drone’s surroundings while supporting navigation and delivery tasks. Amazon says its Prime Air system uses cameras and sensors to navigate and detect obstacles. Its description of the landing system says cameras and radar scan below the aircraft for people or animals, obstacles such as buildings, poles, and vehicles, and terrain or vegetation that could affect landing. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its own system, not a specification for every delivery drone. Amazon’s Prime Air safety description and its account of how the delivery system works provide more detail.
Sensor type also varies. Australian Government privacy guidance says many delivery drones use low-resolution black-and-white cameras or LiDAR for navigation. Amazon, by contrast, describes a camera-and-radar perception system. The Australian guidance is general and specific to its jurisdiction; it is not an inventory of every aircraft or proof of what a particular drone overhead carries. “Capture” can mean different things: a sensor may detect a nearby object for navigation, process visual data onboard, transmit a feed, or save footage for later. A sensor’s presence alone does not tell you which of these happens. The available sources do not establish a sector-wide rate of identifiable-person capture, how many operators store footage, or a common retention period.

Can delivery drones see into my yard or home?
A drone’s sensors may detect things in its surroundings, including people and structures. But the sources here do not establish what a particular aircraft can resolve through a window, how often it points a camera toward private spaces, or whether any resulting image is saved. Camera quality, direction, activation, flight path, and data handling depend on the aircraft and operation; do not treat a description of one fleet as proof about another.
For a specific route, ask the local operator what sensors are fitted, where they point, when they activate, and whether visual data is recorded, streamed, or processed only for the flight. EASA’s European code of conduct recommends minimizing data collection and sensor capability to what is necessary, considering routes near private or sensitive places, and explaining data purpose, types, retention, sharing, and contact options. Do delivery drones record audio?
The cited sources do not establish an audio policy for every delivery aircraft. Australian Government guidance says many delivery drones use low-resolution black-and-white cameras or LiDAR for navigation and says these drones do not carry microphones. That is jurisdiction-specific general guidance, not confirmation about every model or a particular drone flying elsewhere. For an aircraft serving your area, ask its operator directly whether it has a microphone and whether audio is collected.
Who can access drone camera footage?
Access depends on whether the operator records or transmits data and on its own handling practices. Amazon says Prime Air’s onboard camera data is processed by the drone for safe navigation, that no person monitors a live camera feed, and that it does not track individuals or record movements. The sources do not provide a complete, independent comparison of operators’ recording windows, retention schedules, deletion practices, access controls, or third-party sharing. When contacting an operator, ask who can access any saved or transmitted data, whether contractors or other third parties receive it, how long it is retained, and how deletion works.

- Identify the operator. In the United States, the FAA lists approved package-delivery operators and describes its role in aviation safety, Part 135 operator certification, and environmental review. Its page also says operators must comply with applicable state and local requirements, inform local communities, and respond to public inquiries. - Ask for aircraft- and route-specific details. Request the sensor types and direction, purpose and activation window, and whether data is processed onboard, streamed, or recorded.
- Ask how data is handled. If anything is saved or shared, ask about retention and deletion, who can access it, and whether third parties receive it.
- Ask about the route and how to raise a concern. Seek information about flights near homes or sensitive locations and the operator’s contact or complaint channel.
For comparison, use the same questions for each operator: sensors and direction; purpose and activation; real-time processing versus recording; retention and deletion; third-party access; routes near homes or sensitive sites; and public contact options.
