To improve PS5 game graphics, first confirm the console is sending the best signal your screen supports, then calibrate HDR and choose a game’s visual-quality or performance preset to suit your priorities. The result depends on the display, the game, and the HDMI connection; PS5 settings cannot add features a screen or game does not support.

Check the PS5’s video output

On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information to see what the display reports it can handle. With resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution the TV supports, according to PlayStation Support.

If the screen and game support the resolution you want, select the corresponding output resolution here. A PS5 can output 4K, but having a 4K-capable console alone does not guarantee a 4K signal: the display and connection path must support it too. Sony describes 4K as almost four times higher definition than standard 1080p HD; that comparison is not a measured estimate of how much changing a setting will improve a particular game.

How do I adjust HDR on PS5?

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate HDR for your display.
  3. Under HDR, consider On When Supported if you want content without HDR support to display in SDR.

HDR can provide a wider range of contrast, color, and brightness than SDR, but the visible result depends on the home entertainment setup. With Always On, the PS5 converts output from games and apps that lack HDR support into HDR output; this changes the output mode, but does not give that content native HDR support. Sony’s instructions are in its HDR setup guide.

Should you use Resolution Mode or Performance Mode?

Preset What it favors When to choose it
Resolution Mode Higher graphic quality Choose it when visual detail matters more than smoother motion.
Performance Mode Smoother motion Choose it when motion smoothness matters more than visual detail.

These are PS5 game presets, not universal guarantees about a specific resolution or frame rate. They apply only to PS5 games that offer the modes, and each game can implement them differently. Set the preference under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets; the available choice may be labeled Game Default, Performance Mode, or Resolution Mode. A game’s own settings may also offer additional control. See Sony’s game preset instructions. There is no universally best mode: choose based on the game and the trade-off you prefer.

Enable 120 Hz or VRR only if the setup supports them

For 120 Hz output or Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), the display and the game must support the feature. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV. Confirm the screen’s capabilities and supported HDMI port rather than assuming a console setting will enable an unsupported feature. Check the console’s video-output information and the display maker’s specifications for the relevant mode.

Troubleshoot missing or unstable 4K/120 Hz output

If 4K/120 Hz is unavailable or flickers, work through the signal path before changing unrelated picture settings. Sony’s resolution troubleshooting guidance recommends checking:

  • Whether the TV supports 4K/120 Hz and has current firmware.
  • Whether the PS5 is plugged into the TV’s HDMI port that supports the desired signal.
  • Whether an intermediary receiver supports 4K/120 Hz; connect the console directly to the TV to check whether the receiver is the limiting link.
  • Whether the PS5 resolution is set to Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate is set to Automatic.
  • Whether the HDMI cable is the one supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A new cable is not a default graphics upgrade if the current connection works.

If 4K output flickers, Sony suggests trying Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2. This can stabilize a signal, but may limit some high-bandwidth output modes and color formats.

Leave RGB Range alone unless the signal is wrong

Do not change RGB Range as a graphics tweak. Sony advises changing it only when an HDMI device is incorrectly reporting the range. Resolution, HDR, refresh rate, and VRR are separate capabilities: use the settings that match the screen, game, and connection rather than changing color-range controls without a signal problem.
