If your Motorola phone drains quickly or app notifications arrive late, first check the app’s battery and background settings, then test whether Battery Saver or notification controls are involved. Motorola’s menu names and available options vary by model and Android version, so use the closest matching settings or search Settings for the feature name.
Start by identifying when the problem happens
Before changing settings, note your Motorola model, Android version, the affected app, and whether its notifications arrive as soon as you open it. Also check whether delays happen only while Battery Saver is on. These details help distinguish restricted background activity from a notification or connectivity issue.
Settings differ among Motorola models and software versions. If a path below is missing, search Settings for the named feature or use the support page for your exact model.
Find what is using the battery
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Review apps and features with high use. On supported models, Motorola’s guidance allows you to view usage over the last 24 hours or 14 days.
- Tap an app to inspect its battery controls and look for options that limit background activity.

Check background-app controls if notifications are late
Background restrictions can save power but may prevent an app from checking for new content promptly. Motorola says an app set to “Don’t allow” will not deliver notifications, updates, or new content until you open it.
- In Settings, search for Manage background apps if your phone offers it.
- Find the affected app and review its current setting.
- For an app where timely notifications or syncing matter, choose Always allow if that option is available. Motorola Support recommends it when missed notifications, sync failures, or lost GPS would be a problem.
Allowing an app to run in the background can use more battery. Apply the setting selectively rather than making every app unrestricted. If your model uses different controls, check Motorola’s background-app instructions.

Test whether Battery Saver is contributing
Battery Saver can restrict background activity and may defer content refresh until you open an app. Temporarily turn it off and observe whether the affected app updates or notifies more promptly. A change points to a possible connection, but does not by itself prove Battery Saver is the sole cause. Motorola explains the feature’s behavior in its Battery Saver guidance.
Make sure notifications are allowed to appear
- Check that Do Not Disturb is off, or configured to allow the alerts you expect. It can mute or hide notifications.
- Open Android’s app notification settings and confirm notifications are enabled for the affected app.
- Check the app itself for notification switches and, where available, the relevant notification categories.

Investigate battery drain that remains unexplained
Restart and isolate third-party apps
Restart the phone. If drain continues without an obvious cause, Motorola recommends using Safe mode to check whether a third-party app may be involved. Safe mode behavior and entry steps vary by model, so follow the instructions for your device rather than relying on a universal button sequence.
Consider connectivity before blaming the battery
If the issue is that apps cannot connect or refresh, rather than general power use, Motorola advises contacting your carrier for non-app connectivity problems. Avoid jumping from one symptom to a factory reset or battery replacement.

Check battery condition when the symptoms point to hardware
On supported devices, the Device Help app includes a battery hardware test that reports current power, condition, temperature, and charging status. Unexpected shutdowns or inconsistent battery readings are reasons to check the condition rather than assume a background setting is responsible.
Motorola’s older guidance describes calibration steps for certain cases. Follow only the instructions for your exact model and use the supplied charger. Motorola also warns against attempting to remove or replace the battery in its cited notification troubleshooting guidance; seek model-appropriate service if a hardware problem is suspected. Choose settings according to what matters most

There is no universal setting that maximizes both battery conservation and immediate notifications. Motorola’s support material does not provide a quantified estimate of battery-life improvement from these changes.
