Before buying a budget air purifier, check that its particle-cleaning capacity fits your room, that its filter targets the pollutant you care about, and that replacement filters are available and affordable. Also verify ozone safety and whether the noise and energy use make it practical to run at the needed speed. A low purchase price alone does not establish good value.
1. Match the purifier’s CADR to your room
Measure the floor area the unit will serve: length multiplied by width. Then compare that area with the purifier’s published clean air delivery rate (CADR) or recommended room size. For open layouts, include the connected space the purifier is expected to clean. A higher CADR means the unit can filter more particles and serve a larger area.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) illustrative chart estimates these minimum CADRs for particle removal, assuming an 8-foot ceiling; the figures are estimates, not product guarantees. Ceilings higher than 8 feet can increase the air volume the cleaner needs to handle, so the chart may understate the requirement. For wildfire smoke, EPA’s indoor-filtration guidance says smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. Check which speed the rating reflects
CADR is typically measured at the purifier’s highest speed. A coverage claim does not tell you how well the unit will perform at a quieter, lower setting. Compare smoke, dust, and pollen CADRs when available, and consider whether you can tolerate the setting needed to reach the stated capacity. For smaller particles, EPA advises looking at the smoke CADR.
2. Choose a filter for the pollutant you want to address
Particles: look for particle filtration and CADR
Portable cleaners commonly achieve high particle CADR with a HEPA filter. Use the CADR and room fit to assess particle-cleaning capacity; the filter label alone does not establish how much air the complete unit cleans.

Gases and odors: check for a gas-targeted filter
CADR measures particle removal, not gas removal. If gases or some odors are a concern, check whether the unit includes activated carbon or another absorbent designed for gases. EPA notes that a substantial amount of carbon matters, and there is no widely used performance rating system for gas removal. Do not treat a high CADR or a general “odor” claim as proof of gas performance.

3. Check the ongoing cost and availability of filters
Every filter eventually needs replacement, and an overloaded, dirty filter will not work well. Before choosing a purifier, look up the replacement filter for that exact model and confirm:
- Replacement filters are currently available from a reliable seller.
- The filter is explicitly compatible with the model you are considering.
- You can find the manufacturer’s replacement instructions and timing.
- The recurring filter cost fits your budget, not just the purifier’s upfront price.
Do not assume filters are inexpensive or interchangeable because the appliance itself is cheap. Filter prices and stock vary; verify them for the specific model before purchase.

4. Avoid ozone-producing cleaners
Choose a portable cleaner that does not produce ozone or other harmful byproducts. EPA recommends this in its wildfire guidance and points to California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification as a way to identify cleaners that make little to no ozone. EPA, Indoor Air Filtration. Higher fan speeds and longer run times generally increase the amount of air filtered. A purifier that is undersized for the room—or whose effective setting is too noisy to use—may not meet your goal in everyday use. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for noise and energy use at the speeds you expect to use; compare like with like rather than relying on a single maximum-setting figure.

6. Compare budget models with a practical checklist
For each candidate, record the evidence that matters for your room and concern. If a detail is not stated in current product documentation, do not assume the cheapest model is equivalent.
- Room fit: intended area, ceiling height, open-plan layout, and the relevant CADR.
- Rating context: smoke, dust, and pollen CADRs where available, and whether the stated performance is at a speed you can live with.
- Pollutant target: particle filtration for particles; a substantial gas-targeted absorbent such as activated carbon for relevant gases or odors.
- Ownership: replacement-filter price, availability, model compatibility, and instructions.
- Operation: noise and energy-use information at the settings you plan to use.
- Byproducts: confirmation that the unit does not intentionally generate ozone; CARB certification can help identify products that make little to no ozone.
