Start with Auto White Balance or the preset that matches the dominant light, then check the leaves against any neutral object in the frame. Cloudy and Shade add warmth: useful for a golden autumn look, but not necessarily more accurate. For consistent neutral color, use a custom white balance from a neutral card; if you shoot RAW, you can also fine-tune the balance later.

What white balance does—and what “accurate” means

White balance compensates for the color of the light illuminating a scene. A neutral white balance renders neutral objects without an unwanted color cast; a warmer balance deliberately shifts the image toward yellow or orange. Both can be valid choices, but a warm look is a creative interpretation rather than a more accurate reading of the scene. Canon explains that white-balance options are intended to match different lighting conditions in its white balance guidance.

There is no universal Kelvin value for fall foliage. The light, the camera’s implementation of its presets, and whether you want neutral or warm color all affect the appropriate setting.

Choose a starting setting

Setting When to try it What to expect
Auto White Balance Light is changing, or you want a neutral-oriented baseline. The camera selects a balance. Nikon says its Auto setting aims for accurate color; check whether it leaves as much foliage warmth as you want. See Nikon’s fall foliage guidance.
Daylight Direct daylight dominates and you want a stable baseline. Its approximate Kelvin value varies by camera. Canon lists 5200 K for Daylight on the EOS R6; that figure is specific to that model’s manual, not a universal setting. See the EOS R6 manual.
Cloudy The scene is overcast, or you want a modest warm lift. Adds warmth, which can make foliage look more golden; neutral objects may become too warm. Nikon and Canon describe this warming effect in their fall foliage guidance and autumn photography guide.
Shade The subject is in open shade, or you want a stronger warm effect. Often warmer than Cloudy. Nikon notes that Shade can emphasize warm foliage hues; watch for orange casts on neutral objects. See Nikon’s fall foliage guidance.
Custom or PRE, measured from a neutral card You need a repeatable reference or Auto does not suit the light. Measures light reflected from the card. Place it in the same illumination as the subject and use your camera’s own procedure; controls differ by model. Nikon describes preset manual white balance with a white card in its D850 manual.
Kelvin setting You want direct, incremental control. Useful for fine adjustments, but there is no single fall-color value. Check your camera’s display and manual to confirm which direction makes the image warmer or cooler.
RAW, adjusted during processing You want flexibility to refine the balance after capture. A neutral white or gray object in the image can serve as a processing reference. Canon describes clicking a neutral object as a reference in its autumn photography guide; available controls depend on the software.

Set and check white balance in the field

  1. Decide on the intended look. For neutral color, aim to remove unwanted casts. For a deliberately golden rendering, choose warmth as a style decision.
  2. Make a baseline frame. Start with Auto White Balance or the preset that matches the dominant light. Canon describes Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, and custom balance as options for different lighting conditions in its white balance guidance.
  3. Compare Cloudy and Shade if you want more warmth. These presets can enrich the warm impression of leaves, but can also push whites and grays toward yellow or orange. On the Canon EOS R6, the manual gives approximate preset values of 6000 K for Cloudy and 7000 K for Shade, compared with 5200 K for Daylight. These are EOS R6 examples only; other camera bodies may assign different values. See the EOS R6 manual.
  4. Inspect leaves and a neutral object. Use a gray rock, white sign, or neutral card if one is in the scene. If neutral items look yellow-orange, reduce the warmth or measure a custom balance.
  5. For a custom reading, use a neutral card in the subject’s light. Follow the camera manual’s custom or PRE procedure rather than assuming another model’s button sequence applies. A white balance card is optional: presets, Auto, and RAW adjustment are alternatives.
  6. With mixed light, prioritize the important area. Sunlit leaves, shaded foliage, and reflected light may have different color temperatures. One white-balance setting cannot neutralize all of them at once; Nikon discusses this difference in its fall foliage guidance. Judge the focal area and accept that other regions may retain a cast.
  7. If you shoot RAW, refine the balance in processing. Use a neutral white or gray object as a reference when available. The exact tool and label depend on the software; Canon’s autumn guide describes this approach in Digital Photo Professional.

Why camera preset numbers are only examples

Presets approximate common lighting rather than reading every part of a complex scene independently. As one model-specific reference, Canon’s EOS R6 manual lists approximate values of 5200 K for Daylight, 6000 K for Cloudy, and 7000 K for Shade. Those values do not prescribe a fall setting for every camera: Nikon’s D850 manual gives different approximate preset values, underscoring that implementations vary. Check the manual for your own body and treat Kelvin as a starting point, not a guarantee of neutral foliage.
