For a plug-in lamp that only needs scheduled or remote on/off control, a smart plug is usually the simpler choice: it keeps the bulb you already have. Choose a smart bulb when you want to control the light itself—such as dimming it, changing its white tone, or choosing colors. If you want to dim a plug-in lamp without changing its bulb, look for a purpose-built lamp dimmer; an ordinary smart plug does not dim.

What’s the difference between a smart plug and a smart bulb?

A smart plug controls power to whatever is connected to it. Philips Hue describes its plug as a “remote-controlled power switch” for lamps and other plugged-in devices. When the plug switches off, power to the lamp stops; when it switches on, power is restored. That provides remote or automated on/off control, not bulb-level dimming or color adjustment. Philips Hue explains how a smart plug works.

A smart bulb controls the light at the bulb. Depending on the model, its features may include on/off control, dimming, adjustable warm-to-cool white, or color effects. Check the exact bulb’s feature list rather than assuming every smart bulb supports every option. ENERGY STAR’s smart-lighting guidance outlines features and buying considerations.

Which one should you use for a lamp?

Choose a smart plug for basic on/off automation

Use a smart plug for a table or floor lamp if you want to schedule it, turn it on or off remotely, or use compatible voice control—and you are happy with the bulb and its existing light output. The lamp must be plugged into the smart plug, and its own inline or built-in switch must remain on. If that switch cuts power, the smart plug cannot make the lamp light up.

Choose a smart bulb for control over the light

Choose a smart bulb if you want to adjust brightness, change between warm and cool white, or use colors, where those features are supported by the model. Check that the bulb’s base and shape fit the fixture and that the bulb offers the controls you want.

A smart bulb also needs power to respond to smart controls. If someone turns off the wall or lamp switch, the bulb may appear offline until power is restored. A workable arrangement is to leave that switch on and control the bulb with its app, voice assistant, or a compatible remote. ENERGY STAR advises buyers to consider whether they want control from a wall switch or a remote.

Choose a lamp dimmer if you need both a plug-in lamp and dimming

An ordinary on/off smart plug does not dim. A purpose-built lamp dimming smart plug is a separate option, but the dimmer, lamp, and bulb must be compatible. For example, Lutron lists its Caséta PD-3PCL-WH for up to 100 W of dimmable LEDs or 300 W of incandescent or halogen bulbs. Those limits apply to that model, not to smart plugs generally. See Lutron’s product information and compatibility guidance.

Best fit A plug-in lamp when remote or scheduled on/off is enough A fixture where you want bulb-level light controls
Dimming, white tuning, or color Not with an ordinary on/off smart plug; a dedicated lamp dimmer may support dimming May be available, depending on the bulb model
Physical control to watch The lamp’s own switch must be on The fixture’s switch must leave the bulb powered
Compatibility to check Smart-home platform, connection range, plug fit, and rated load Base and fixture fit, platform, connection range, and desired features

Check compatibility, connection, and load before buying

  • Smart-home compatibility: Confirm the product works with the app, voice assistant, or smart-home platform you use. Features and connection options vary by product.
  • Connection range: ENERGY STAR notes that Bluetooth has limited range. A Bluetooth-only product may not support away-from-home control unless it has another connection path, such as a compatible hub or bridge.
  • Bulb and fixture fit: For a smart bulb, check the base and physical dimensions as well as the fixture’s requirements. Verify that the model supports your preferred controls.
  • Smart-plug load: Check the exact plug’s rated wattage and amperage. If several lamps share one plug, add their loads and compare the combined total with the plug’s rating. Follow that model’s manual.
  • Direct connection: TP-Link warns users of its smart plugs not to connect a power strip or extension cord to the plug and cautions against exceeding its ratings. That guidance is model-specific; follow the instructions for the plug you buy. Read TP-Link’s smart-plug guidance.

When neither option is the right fit

A plug-in adapter cannot control a hardwired ceiling fixture. A compatible smart bulb may work if the fixture and bulb support the desired features; a smart switch is another option, but installation and wiring compatibility should be checked against the manufacturer’s documentation. If your goal is only to control a plug-in lamp’s power, a smart plug remains the more direct fit.

Do not treat a smart plug as a general-purpose safety disconnect for appliances. Restoring power does not guarantee that a device resumes its previous state or turns on as intended. TP-Link notes that most TVs enter standby rather than fully power off, so they may need to be turned on manually after power returns. Check the appliance and plug manuals before automating any device.

What smart plugs and bulbs can—and can’t—tell you about energy use

There is no established head-to-head energy-savings figure for smart plugs versus smart bulbs in the cited guidance, so neither category can be described as universally more efficient based on these sources. ENERGY STAR says, “If you choose smart lighting that has earned the ENERGY STAR, it’s using less energy when it’s on and in standby.” That statement concerns qualifying smart lighting, not a comparison between smart plugs and smart bulbs.
