Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo protect a computer and router when electricity returns, connect them to a genuine surge protective device (SPD), not just an ordinary power strip. If you also need them to stay on during an outage, use a UPS with battery backup. For broader household coverage, ask a qualified electrician about a whole-home SPD. None of these measures guarantees protection from a direct lightning strike.
Why an outage can put electronics at risk
A power outage can abruptly shut down a computer or router. When electricity is restored, a voltage spike may also damage connected electronics. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) explains that surge protective devices help protect electronics from voltage spikes when full power returns: ESFI surge protective devices guidance.
Choose protection by what you need
| Device | What it does | Coverage and installation |
|---|---|---|
| Point-of-use SPD | Helps protect against voltage spikes | Protects only equipment connected to it; plug-in units are installed by the user. |
| UPS with battery backup | Provides temporary power during an interruption and can reduce abrupt shutdowns | For critical connected equipment; available runtime depends on the specific unit and connected load. |
| Whole-home SPD | Provides broader surge protection for the home’s electrical system | Installed at or near the electrical service or panel by a qualified electrician. |
These options have different jobs: a UPS adds temporary battery power, while SPDs address voltage surges. ESFI recommends UPS backup for critical electronics and says whole-home units should be installed by a qualified electrician. See ESFI’s guidance on surge protection and its power outage guidance.
Set up a computer and router before an outage
- Use a surge-rated device. Plug the computer and router into a point-of-use SPD. Check the device labeling and documentation to confirm it is surge protective; a plain power strip alone does not provide surge protection. ESFI distinguishes surge protectors from ordinary power strips in its consumer guidance.
- Check the protection indicator. If the SPD has an indicator or alarm, follow its instructions. A device may need replacement over time or after a major surge; do not assume it remains protective if its indicator shows otherwise.
- Add battery backup only if you need continuity. Connect equipment that must remain on briefly to a UPS. Runtime varies with the unit and load, so consult the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming a particular number of minutes.
- Consider broader coverage separately. If you want protection beyond the devices plugged into one SPD, ask a qualified electrician about a whole-home SPD at the electrical service or panel.
What to do when an outage or surge threat is expected
During an ordinary outage
Be prepared for a sudden shutdown. Ready.gov’s business outage toolkit advises disconnecting computers and other equipment in case of a momentary surge. Although the guidance is business-oriented, the practical precaution also applies to household computers when it is safe and practical to unplug them: Ready.gov business IT outage guidance.

#1 Best Overall
- KEEP YOUR COMPUTER, WI-FI AND ROUTER RUNNING THROUGH POWER OUTAGES: Supplies short-term battery power during outages to maintain internet connectivity and allow safe shutdown of computer during power interruptions
- POWER PROBLEMS DON'T ONLY HAPPEN DURING STORMS: 23 minutes of runtime (at 100W load) guards against outages, while surge protection shields connected devices from unexpected power events that happen even on a normal day
- PROTECT EVERYTHING ON YOUR DESK: 5 well-spaced outlets with full battery backup and surge protection, plus 2 surge-only outlets for less critical gear
- PHONE CHARGER: Keep your phone charged even when the power's out. The built-in 1.5A USB port works during outages
- EASY BATTERY REPLACEMENT KEEPS COSTS LOW: Swap the internal battery in minutes when it ages out, no need to replace the whole unit (APC replacement battery APCRBC154, sold separately)
When lightning-related surges are a concern
If a surge threat is expected and it is safe and practical to do so, unplug sensitive electronics in advance. ESFI cautions that neither point-of-use nor whole-home surge protection handles a direct lightning strike; a surge protector is not a guarantee against one. Read ESFI’s lightning safety guidance.
Whole-home installation and local code
A whole-home SPD is an electrician-installed option for broader coverage, not a substitute for point-of-use protection on a computer or router. Code requirements depend on the locally adopted code and the details of the project. ESFI summarizes 2020 National Electrical Code requirements for new or renovated homes, but that summary should not be treated as a universal statement of current local requirements. Confirm applicable rules with a qualified electrician or local authority having jurisdiction: ESFI surge protective devices guidance.
