For routine dust and fingerprints, turn the phone off, unplug it, remove its case, and gently wipe the rear touchscreen with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Start dry. For stubborn grime or disinfection, follow the current cleaning instructions for the exact phone model and its materials; if those instructions permit liquid, apply a little to the cloth, never spray the phone. Keep liquid away from openings, avoid harsh cleaners and pressure, and leave factory-applied protective film in place unless the maker says to remove it.
How to clean a rear touchscreen for everyday dust and fingerprints
- Power down and unplug the phone. Remove the case and any accessories so you can reach the rear screen and its edges.
- Check for grit. If you see particles that could drag across the surface, lift them away gently before wiping. This is a cautious practical step; the manufacturer instructions cited here do not specify a separate grit-removal procedure for rear touchscreens.
- Wipe with a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. A camera-lens cleaning cloth is also suitable. Use light strokes and do not press hard. For common dust, streaks, and smudges, Google recommends starting with a dry cloth.
A microfiber cloth is generally all you need for routine cleaning. You do not need a chemical cleaner for ordinary fingerprints.
What to use for stubborn grime or disinfection
Cleaning guidance varies by manufacturer, model, and surface material. Do not treat one maker’s approved cleaner as a universal recipe for every phone. Check the current instructions for your exact device before using a damp cloth, soap, wipes, or alcohol.

Disinfection is different from ordinary cleaning. Use disinfectant only when appropriate for your model, and avoid repeated or forceful wiping. Samsung’s U.S. guidance specifies surfaces and solution types; it does not make those instructions interchangeable with Google’s, HMD’s, or Sony’s.

What can damage the phone or its finish
- Do not spray cleaner onto the phone. If the model’s instructions allow liquid, put a small amount on the cloth instead.
- Keep moisture and soap out of ports, microphones, speakers, seams, and other openings.
- Avoid bleach and abrasive materials. Do not scrub hard or repeatedly wipe the display.
- Do not assume a cleaner safe for glass is safe for other materials. Rear panels, accessories, rubber, leather, painted surfaces, and protective films may have different care requirements.
- Do not pick at factory-applied film. Google warns that removing the protective film on a Pixel Fold can harm its display.
Samsung Global Newsroom’s May 12, 2020 article notes that smartphone cleaners can affect coatings and quotes Dr. Doo-Ryeon Chung, Director of the Center for Infection Prevention and Control at Samsung Medical Center: “In order to use your smartphone safely, it is imperative that you keep your device clean.” That general hygiene statement is not a claim that a particular cleaner kills pathogens; use the current instructions for your phone for cleaning and disinfection.

Use a case designed for the exact phone model. Check that it leaves the rear cameras, sensors, buttons, and touchscreen usable.
