For selected household circuits or longer backup, consider a battery-and-inverter system sized for the loads and runtime you need. A bare inverter is only one component—not a complete backup system.
What is the difference between a UPS and an inverter?
A UPS is a continuity system: it combines power-conversion equipment, switches, and stored energy so connected equipment can keep receiving power when utility input fails. The U.S. Department of Energy defines UPSs as systems for maintaining load power during an input failure in its Uninterruptible Power Supplies overview.
An inverter converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). In a home backup setup, it needs a suitable DC energy source—commonly a battery—as well as compatible wiring and protective equipment. The inverter alone does not provide stored energy or necessarily arrange a safe, automatic transfer from grid power.
Which option fits your backup need?
| Situation | Likely starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Router, modem, desktop computer, or small electronics during a brief interruption | Battery-backup UPS | Connected load in watts and VA, runtime at that load, transfer behavior, outlet type, and battery replacement support. |
| Selected household loads during a longer outage | Battery-and-inverter system | Load profile, battery energy, inverter continuous and surge output, voltage, transfer arrangement, protection, and installation. |
| Existing grid-tied rooftop solar | Do not assume panels alone will provide backup | Whether the system has configured islanding or backup capability and storage. |
| Medical equipment | Plan with the equipment maker or clinician, and prepare an outage plan | Device draw, permitted power source, runtime, charging needs, and contingency location. |
This is a category-level guide, not a performance comparison of specific products. DOE’s facility-oriented backup-power standard is not a residential installation manual, but its sizing principles—considering load, duration, electrical requirements, configuration, and protective features—also help frame the questions a household system must answer.

How to size backup power for your equipment
Start with the load, including startup demand
List the equipment you want to keep on, then check each device’s power needs. Watts describe real power consumed; volt-amperes (VA) describe apparent power. Confirm that the UPS or inverter can support both the total load and the required output voltage and frequency. Motors and compressors can draw more power when starting than while running, so check startup or surge requirements for equipment such as a refrigerator or pump.
Set the runtime target
Runtime depends on the actual load and the energy available from the battery. A capacity figure alone does not guarantee a particular number of hours. For a UPS, use the manufacturer’s runtime curve for the load you expect to connect. For an inverter system, size the battery energy and inverter output for the chosen load profile and duration. DOE’s guidance highlights load profile, steady-state and transient demands, timing, required duration, voltage limits, and duty cycle as battery-sizing considerations; apply these as engineering principles, not as household code requirements.

- Powerful Output: 4400 peak watts and 3400 running watts, 2*120V AC ports, 1* 30A RV port, 1*12V DC port, 14 hours runtime at 25% load
- Gas Powered: 2 gallon fuel tank capital
- Features: Inverter technolog, ECO mode, EPA compliment, RV ready, overload protection, low oil shutdown, cold start technology
- Portable Generator: Weight 56lbs, lightweight and easy to move
- Note: All Oxseryn generators are functionally tested in the factory, so there may be a slight smell of gas when you receive it
Check continuity and compatibility
If a brief interruption or transfer could disrupt sensitive equipment, verify the UPS’s transfer behavior and compatibility with that equipment. For either option, check the output voltage and frequency, available outlets or circuit connections, protective features, and whether the system is designed for the way you intend to use it. There is no generic UPS runtime: it varies with the unit, battery condition, and connected load.
Can an inverter or rooftop solar run a home during an outage?
A properly designed battery-and-inverter system can support selected loads during an outage, but the result depends on the system’s capacity, wiring, transfer arrangement, and the loads chosen. “Whole home” should not be assumed from an inverter’s rating alone; the system must be designed for the circuits and demand it will serve.

Grid-tied rooftop solar usually does not keep supplying a home when the grid fails. The Department of Energy explains that solar systems generally shut off during an outage for safety; independent operation requires appropriately configured equipment and storage. As DOE puts it in Solar and Resilience Basics, “Technically, residential solar panels alone are not enough to make your home resilient.” Some systems can form a local grid when configured to do so, but not every solar installation has that capability.
What about medical devices and outage safety?
For a device someone depends on for health, do not assume a general-purpose UPS is approved or sufficient. The CDC warns that outages can be especially dangerous for people reliant on home medical devices and advises identifying backup power sources and adapters in advance. Confirm the device’s allowed power source and needs with its manufacturer or clinician, and include a contingency location in the plan. See the CDC’s Power Sources guidance, dated April 18, 2024.

Battery-based systems avoid combustion exhaust at the point of use, but installed electrical and battery equipment still must meet manufacturer requirements and applicable local rules. If considering a fuel generator for longer outages, CDC guidance says to operate it outdoors at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, and to use a battery-powered or battery-backup carbon monoxide detector indoors. Never run one inside a home, basement, or garage—even with the garage door open. See CDC’s power outage safety guidance, shown as updated August 26, 2026.

- Define what must stay on. Separate small plug-in electronics from appliances or circuits that need a broader backup system.
- Record the electrical requirements. Check watts, VA where relevant, voltage, frequency, and any motor or compressor startup demand.
- Choose a realistic duration. Use the expected load and a manufacturer’s runtime data or system-sizing information, not a battery capacity number by itself.
- Match the equipment to the task. Choose a battery-backup UPS for bounded plug-in loads needing continuity; consider a designed battery-and-inverter system for selected household circuits or longer backup.
- Verify the complete setup. Confirm battery compatibility, transfer behavior, protection, installation needs, and battery replacement or expansion options before relying on it.
The CDC says people experience about four hours of power loss per year on average. That national average, from its April 18, 2024 Power Sources page, is not a prediction of how long any individual household’s outage will last.
