Why sweaters pill
Pilling is a form of wear: friction loosens fibers at the fabric surface, and those fibers gather into small balls. Rubbing while you wear a sweater can cause pills, especially around the elbows, armpits, sleeves, belly, and sides—areas that commonly contact other surfaces or clothing. Woolmark explains the role of friction and common locations, while the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) describes pilling as a laundering and wear problem.
Some fabrics and wear patterns are more prone to this surface wear than others. Care can reduce avoidable rubbing, but pilling cannot be prevented completely.
How to remove pills without harming the knit
- Check the garment first. Read its care label and inspect the affected area. Take extra care with a loose knit, a snag, visible damage, or a valuable sweater; if you cannot work without catching the fabric, stop and consider a qualified knitwear repair professional.
- Lay it flat. Spread the sweater on a firm, smooth surface so the fabric is supported rather than stretched or held in the air.
- Choose a tool suited to the job. For a few isolated pills, lift them gently by hand. For more localized pilling, try a sweater comb with light strokes in the direction of the knit. For broader areas, a fabric shaver is another option; use it gently and follow its instructions. Woolmark describes hand removal, careful combing, and battery-operated shavers; FTC Cashmere advises laying knitwear flat and combing in the knit direction.
- Work slowly and stop if the fabric catches. Avoid pressing hard or scraping repeatedly over the same spot. Clear collected fibers from the tool as needed. If it snags, pulls, or distorts the knit, stop rather than forcing another pass.
A comb and a shaver are both supported options, not interchangeable guarantees. The right choice depends on the sweater’s construction, how concentrated the pills are, and whether you can control a light touch. The cited care guidance does not establish a universal winner or report controlled comparative tests. Patagonia also discusses depilling tools as part of clothing care.

Comb or fabric shaver: which should you use?

How to reduce pilling with washing and storage
Focus on reducing unnecessary friction and following the garment’s care label. ACI advises reading and following label directions for washing and drying. If the label permits hand washing, gently swish the sweater rather than rubbing or wringing it; hand-wash-only sweaters should dry flat. When the label does not specify a machine-wash temperature, ACI’s general guidance is to use cold water. Woolmark recommends turning wool garments inside out before washing. For knitted cashmere and superfine wool, the Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute (CCMI) recommends cold-water hand washing with a detergent suitable for wool, cashmere, and silk. Press out excess water gently with towels rather than twisting or wringing, then dry the garment flat. CCMI recommends dry cleaning for woven garments. Store sweaters folded rather than hanging them, which can stretch knitwear, according to ACI’s sweater-care guidance. Reducing repeated rubbing in wear and care can help limit pilling, but it cannot eliminate it.
