Choose Cursor if you want an AI coding editor with its agent, planning, model choice, and change review centered in one interface. They are not mutually exclusive: Anthropic lists Cursor as a supported IDE for Claude Code, so you can use Claude Code inside Cursor and decide separately whether Cursor Agent belongs in your workflow.
This comparison reflects vendor documentation, not hands-on testing. Pricing and product details below were checked on October 4, 2026, and can change.
What is the difference between Claude Code and Cursor?
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding tool for working with Claude models from a terminal or supported IDE. It can inspect and search a repository, edit files, and run commands. Anthropic describes it as working alongside a developer’s preferred IDE and command-line tools, including Git, and says it can extend its capabilities through MCP servers. It supports macOS, Linux, and Windows. Anthropic’s Claude Code page provides the product description.
Cursor is an AI coding editor with an integrated Agent. Cursor documents agent workflows for understanding a codebase, planning and building features, debugging, and reviewing changes; its Agent can edit code and run terminal commands. Cursor also documents customization through rules, skills, plugins, and MCP servers, plus integrations with development services. See Cursor’s Agent documentation.

The practical distinction is the default working surface: Claude Code brings an agent to the terminal or a supported IDE, while Cursor puts its editor and agent experience together. That is a workflow distinction, not evidence that one produces better code or saves more time.

Cursor’s documentation describes separate usage pools for Cursor Models and Other Models on eligible plans, and says model selection affects how quickly included usage is consumed. Check Cursor’s model and pricing documentation for the current plan details rather than relying on old quota figures.
For Claude Code, the account route matters: Pro and Max cover Claude Code use in supported IDEs, including Cursor, but usage is shared across Claude and Claude Code. A Console account bills at standard API rates. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in the environment, Claude Code may authenticate with that API key instead of the subscription. Confirm the active account before estimating spend. Anthropic’s account and authentication documentation.

Claude Code
Anthropic says Claude Code runs locally in the terminal, communicates with model APIs without requiring a backend server or remote code index, and asks permission before changing files or running commands. This is Anthropic’s description of its product, not an independent security audit. See Anthropic’s Claude Code page.
Cursor
Cursor’s agent-security documentation says reading files and searching code do not require approval. It recommends using .cursorignore to block access to selected files and says actions that could expose sensitive data require explicit approval. Review Cursor’s agent security guidance and configure exclusions before use.
Cursor says prompts and code context are sent to model providers when AI features are used. Its Privacy Mode prevents code from being used for training by Cursor or model providers, and administrators can enforce the mode for teams. Cursor also describes exceptions and differing handling for some configurations, including BYOK and certain models. Privacy Mode is a commitment about training use, not a promise that code context stays on the machine. Read Cursor’s privacy documentation for the applicable details.
For company or regulated code
Compare the terms and configuration that apply to your actual deployment: retention, subprocessors, deployment choices, identity requirements, model availability, and the ability to enforce administrative settings. The available vendor documentation does not support a blanket claim that one product is more private or secure.
Quick Recap
How to choose without overcommitting
- Start with the interface. Decide whether developers primarily want an agent in a terminal or an editor-centered workflow. Claude Code also has supported IDE integrations, so terminal preference does not mean terminal-only use.
- Identify the agent tasks. List whether the team needs repository exploration, feature planning, edits, command execution, debugging, and review. Compare those needs with each vendor’s documented workflows rather than assuming the agents behave identically.
- Map the billing route. For Cursor, account for plan usage and possible on-demand usage. For Claude Code, distinguish subscription use from Console API billing and check whether
ANTHROPIC_API_KEYchanges authentication. - Review repository access and policy. Confirm approval behavior, excluded files, privacy settings, retention terms, and team enforcement against the requirements for the specific codebase.
- Consider coexistence. If Cursor is already the editor, evaluate Claude Code integration and Cursor Agent as separate choices; using both does not merge their accounts, limits, or bills.
