1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKolibri has modest published server requirements, but no official numeric VRAM minimum. Learning Equality recommends 1 GB of RAM on Linux or 2 GB or more on Windows, plus an Intel Core 3 CPU at 1 GHz. Storage depends on the channels you install, and total deployment cost depends on the hardware, network, and work your site needs. These are recommendations—not a guarantee that a particular setup will perform well under every workload.
Kolibri server hardware requirements
Learning Equality’s hardware requirements guide, updated September 28, 2026, gives these server recommendations:
| Component | Published guidance | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| RAM on Linux | 1 GB recommended | A recommendation, not a guarantee for every content set or number of active learners. |
| RAM on Windows | 2 GB or more | The guide does not present this as a universal workload-sizing formula. |
| CPU | Intel Core 3 at 1 GHz recommended | The stated CPU recommendation; actual performance depends on the server and how it is used. |
| Disk space | Depends on imported channel size | Choose content first, then check the size of the channels and resources you plan to keep. |
Kolibri also says a Raspberry Pi is known to work as a server in a facility with fewer than 30 computers. The guide does not specify a Pi generation or promise a particular number of simultaneous users. Treat it as a possible starting point for a small deployment, then test with your own devices, content, and expected activity.
Check performance on the actual installation
Kolibri’s performance guide documents kolibri manage benchmark and kolibri manage profile. The profile collects indicators such as active sessions, CPU use, total and available memory, and Kolibri’s memory use. By default, it takes 60 samples at 10-second intervals. Use these tools during a representative pilot rather than relying on an assumed user-per-server capacity. See the Kolibri performance guide.

Does Kolibri require a GPU or a specific amount of VRAM?
No numeric VRAM requirement is published in the cited Kolibri hardware guidance. It does not specify a discrete GPU or a minimum graphics-memory capacity. For learner devices, its stated requirement is that the video card and driver can play the videos used in Kolibri.
The practical check is video playback on the client devices with the content you intend to use. Kolibri notes that older desktops and low-power computers can serve as clients, including implementations using first-generation Raspberry Pi desktops. For some open-source platforms and browsers, MP4 resources may also require video codecs. The LAN access guide documents supported browser and operating-system combinations.

How much storage do Kolibri channels need?
There is no single fixed installation size in the hardware requirements guidance: the space required depends on the channels and resources you select. Kolibri’s channel import interface can show the total size of selected channels. Use that figure to plan server capacity, allowing for any additional data and operational headroom your deployment needs. The channels and resources guide covers channel management.
For sites with limited or no internet access, Kolibri supports offline content transfer. Its FAQ explains that installers and channels can be carried on USB or hard-drive storage. For provisioning multiple servers, the hard-drive provisioning guide describes preloading one server and copying its .kolibri data to other devices using external storage or a local network. That content directory contains channel databases and resource files. An external USB drive can therefore be useful for transfer or repeated provisioning; choose its capacity based on the channels you plan to carry.

Network and device setup
Kolibri can run on one computer used as both server and learner device. In a multi-device setup, the server and clients need to be on the same local network, such as one provided by a Wi-Fi access point. Clients connect using the server’s IP address and default port 8080, according to the LAN access documentation.
Channel content can be imported from Kolibri Studio, another device on the local network, or attached external storage. A deployment with many client devices may benefit from multiple servers, but Kolibri’s cited guidance does not give a universal threshold for adding one.

Choose a deployment by testing the whole setup
When deciding whether to reuse a laptop or desktop, try a Raspberry Pi, or use a larger server, weigh the real operating conditions together:
- How many computers will connect, and how many learners are likely to be active at once?
- How large are the selected channels, and how much storage is available?
- Can the client devices play the videos in the chosen content?
- Will channels be transferred offline, and what storage or network method is available?
- Are local networking and reliable power available?
- What do CPU and memory measurements show during a representative pilot?
For copying content to multiple servers, Kolibri’s provisioning guide says USB 3 may be faster, while wired LAN can copy to several devices in parallel. This is procedural guidance, not a speed test or a guarantee for a specific drive, cable, or network.

What does it cost to deploy Kolibri?
Kolibri’s FAQ states, “Kolibri is free and open-source software.” That describes the software, not every expense involved in putting it into use. Hardware, electricity, network equipment, data transfer, installation labor, and support may add costs.
| Cost area | What to account for |
|---|---|
| Software | Kolibri software is free and open-source. |
| Server | A suitable existing computer may be reusable; otherwise, budget for server hardware. |
| Learner devices | Include client computers or tablets if the site does not already have them. |
| Storage and transfer | Account for channel storage and any external drives or transfer equipment needed for offline provisioning. |
| Network and operations | Consider local network equipment, power, setup labor, and ongoing support. |
The total depends on deployment size, existing equipment, chosen channels, location, and purchase date. The cited documentation does not provide authoritative current hardware prices or a complete bill of materials, so a reliable estimate must be built from local equipment and labor costs.
