You can view some Visio diagrams in a browser without a Visio license, but editing depends on your Microsoft 365 account, the file format, and the diagram type. For a free editing route, try diagrams.net with a copy of a VSDX file and check the imported result before relying on it.
First decide whether you need to view or edit the diagram
Opening a diagram to inspect it is different from changing its shapes and saving those changes. Microsoft supports browser viewing without a Visio license in supported situations. Creating or editing in Visio for the web generally requires an editing license, except for the limited Visio in Microsoft 365 experience available to eligible business subscribers.

- View or print: Try Microsoft’s browser viewer or open the file from OneDrive or the relevant Microsoft 365 location. The available experience can depend on the file’s location and your account.
- Make basic changes: Check whether your Microsoft 365 business account includes Visio in Microsoft 365 and whether the diagram is a supported basic type.
- Edit a specialized diagram or legacy file: Check the extension and diagram features. You may need a Visio Plan 1 or Plan 2 editing license, and compatibility still depends on the file.
- Use a different editor: diagrams.net says it imports VSDX files. Try it on a duplicate and inspect the conversion before replacing the original.
View a Visio file without a Visio license
Microsoft says Visio diagrams can be viewed in a browser without the desktop application or a Visio license in supported scenarios. If the file is in OneDrive or another Microsoft 365 location you can access, open it there and see whether the browser viewer is available. Microsoft also describes Visio Viewer for viewing or printing diagrams; it is not an editor.
For straightforward read-only review, you can also ask the sender to provide a PDF or image export. That gives you a static copy rather than an editable Visio drawing.

Check whether your Microsoft 365 account includes basic Visio editing
Microsoft says Visio in Microsoft 365 is included for eligible Microsoft 365 business subscribers. It provides a lightweight browser-based experience for basic diagrams, with examples including flow charts, block diagrams, Venn diagrams, and pyramids. Microsoft says complex diagram types such as engineering diagrams and software development plans are not supported in this app.
Availability is tied to the qualifying business subscription and enabled experience; do not assume that every Microsoft 365 account includes it. If the option is available, open the file in Visio for the web and check whether editing is enabled for that diagram.
Check the file extension before choosing an editor
VSD and VSDX are not interchangeable for these workflows. Microsoft’s support page says Visio in Microsoft 365 creates and edits VSDX and does not support legacy VSD files for viewing or editing in that lightweight experience. Microsoft lists broader format support for viewing with Visio Plan 1, while Plan 1 editing is limited to VSDX.
| Route | Viewing | Editing | Key format or content limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser viewing without a Visio license | Supported in applicable Microsoft scenarios | No | Account and storage context can affect availability; Microsoft’s viewer is for viewing or printing. |
| Visio in Microsoft 365 | Yes, for supported diagrams | Basic editing for eligible Microsoft 365 business subscribers | Creates and edits VSDX; does not support legacy VSD in this lightweight experience. Complex diagram types are excluded. |
| Visio Plan 1 | Microsoft lists more formats for viewing than for editing | Yes, with supported content | Plan 1 editing is listed for VSDX; compatibility depends on the diagram. |
| diagrams.net | Yes, after import if the diagram renders correctly | Can edit an imported diagram | Official information confirms VSDX import, not lossless conversion of every feature. |
Microsoft’s format and plan details are described in its Visio for the web support article. Check that page and your account if a specific file or plan is not behaving as expected.

Try diagrams.net on a copy of a VSDX file
diagrams.net describes its product as free online diagram software and says it imports VSDX. The import claim does not establish that every Visio feature will transfer intact, so treat this as a conversion workflow to verify, not a guaranteed replacement for Visio.
- Make a duplicate of the original VSDX file so the Visio source remains untouched.
- Open diagrams.net and use its VSDX import workflow to load the duplicate.
- Inspect the imported diagram closely, including shapes, connectors, layers, and text.
- If the result is acceptable, save the edited work separately and confirm that the format meets the recipient’s needs before sharing it.
The official diagrams.net site identifies VSDX import support, but does not promise complete fidelity for every drawing.
When you need Visio-compatible editing
If the file is a legacy VSD, uses specialized diagram features, or must remain reliably editable as a Visio drawing, the free viewing route is not enough. Microsoft identifies Visio Plan 1 and Plan 2 as licensed browser-editing routes, subject to format and compatibility limits. Confirm the plan’s current support for your file before relying on it; specialized content may not work in the lightweight Microsoft 365 app.
Microsoft’s Visio in Microsoft 365 overview explains which basic diagram categories that included experience supports. For view-only access, Microsoft’s Visio Viewer page describes browser viewing and viewing or printing with the viewer.
