Inhale and swallowing are separate from gaining a Copy Ability: an enemy may be impossible to inhale, or it may be inhalable but have no ability to copy. Some games also add specific conditions, such as requiring an enemy to be defeated first or preventing Kirby from inhaling while he already has an ability.
Inhaling an enemy does not guarantee a Copy Ability
Nintendo’s Kirby Super Star manual describes inhaling and swallowing as the steps for copying, then distinguishes two reasons the process may not work: some enemies cannot be inhaled, and some have no ability to copy. The distinction matters: being an enemy—or even being swallowable—does not mean it will give Kirby a power.
“However, please note that some enemies cannot be inhaled and some possess no ability to copy.”
Why Kirby may not get an ability
The enemy cannot be inhaled
If the game does not allow Kirby to inhale that enemy, the usual inhale-and-swallow route to copying stops before the ability question arises. The Kirby’s Adventure manual and the Kirby Super Star manual document inhaling and Copy Ability rules for their respective games.

The enemy can be inhaled but has no copyable ability
Some enemies can be swallowed without providing a Copy Ability. In that case, Kirby has not necessarily failed to copy a power; the enemy simply is not a source of one in that game.
The game requires the enemy to be defeated first
Nintendo’s Kirby Super Deluxe overview says that some enemies must be damaged and defeated before Kirby can inhale them. This is a rule documented for that title, not a rule to assume applies across the series.

Kirby already has a copied ability
The same Kirby Super Deluxe overview says Kirby cannot inhale an enemy while he is using a copied ability. That is a temporary restriction tied to Kirby’s state in that game. Check the particular title’s manual or in-game guidance rather than treating it as universal.
Could Kirby have copied the ability and then lost it?
In Kirby Super Star, taking damage can make Kirby lose his ability, which appears as a star he can inhale to regain it. The star disappears after a time, though the manual does not give an exact duration. Nintendo also notes that some abilities in Kirby Super Deluxe are limited-use and disappear after a set number of activations. Either situation can make a power vanish after it was acquired; it is different from an enemy never providing an ability.

How to diagnose a specific encounter
- Check whether Kirby can inhale the enemy. If not, the normal copy sequence cannot proceed.
- Check whether that enemy provides an ability in that game. Some enemies have no ability to copy.
- Look for a title-specific condition. For example, Kirby Super Deluxe requires some enemies to be damaged and defeated first.
- Check Kirby’s current ability state. In Kirby Super Deluxe, Kirby cannot inhale an enemy while using a copied ability.
- Consider whether the power was gained and then lost. Damage, a disappearing ability star, or a limited-use ability can account for a power vanishing after copying.
Why the answer depends on the Kirby game
Copy Ability sets and gameplay rules differ between Kirby titles. Nintendo’s Kirby Official Portal describes Copy Abilities broadly and lists a range of Copy and Special Abilities, but it does not make every enemy or every game follow one identical rule. For a specific enemy, rely on the manual or in-game instructions for the title you are playing.
