First determine whether the sound is electronic hiss from the audio chain or headphone processing, or noise from your surroundings. A planar driver is not, by itself, evidence that the headphones are causing hiss. Pause playback, switch ANC or transparency off if available, and try another source before changing equipment.

Identify which kind of noise you hear

Listen for the sound with playback paused and at a safe, low volume. A steady broadband “shhhh” may be an electronics noise floor or ANC noise; a low hum or buzz can point to a source or connection; crackling or intermittent sound may indicate a connection or hardware fault. These are troubleshooting clues, not measurements.

  • Noise remains with playback paused: headphone electronics, ANC or the audio source may be contributing.
  • Noise changes with the source: investigate that device, its output, or its connection.
  • You hear identifiable sounds from the room: this is an isolation problem, not headphone hiss.

ANC can produce a faint electronic white noise that is more noticeable in a very quiet room without audio playing, according to Sennheiser Hearing support. Music often masks it. Philips likewise describes an amplifier noise floor as normal for the specific noise-cancelling models listed on its support page; that guidance does not establish that hiss is harmless in every headphone.

Troubleshoot hiss in this order

1. Compare ANC and transparency modes

If your headphones have ANC or transparency, compare the sound with each mode off and on while playback is paused. Hiss that appears only with processing enabled is consistent with noise from the electronics or microphone processing. Wind may also reach ANC microphones outdoors. If the sound persists with processing off, continue with the source and connection checks.

  • Premium build for durability and comfort: Soft, eight-level adjustable headband, robust metal frame, and hinges, and sleek earcup with signature ROG elements

2. Try another audio source

At a safe, low level, connect the headphones to another phone, computer, DAC, or amplifier. If the hiss changes or disappears, focus on the original source and its output. A different amplifier is not a universal cure: the cited manufacturer guidance does not show that buying an external amplifier will remove hiss from planar headphones.

3. Reseat and inspect the connections

Unplug and firmly reconnect the headphone cable at both ends, if detachable. Check for visible damage, and try a known-good compatible cable if one is available. OPPO’s PM-3 support guidance notes that an incompletely seated or wrong-end cable can cause missing or intermittent channel audio; that is useful connection advice, not proof that a cable causes every hiss problem. See OPPO PM-3 support.

HIFIMAN Edition XS Full-Size Over-Ear Open-Back Planar Magnetic Hi-Fi Headphones with Stealth Magnets Design, Adjustable Headband, Detachable Cable for Audiophiles, Home, Studio-Black
  • A Major Upgrade of the Popular Edition X: The new Edition XS expands on its predecessor’s achievements with several essential upgrades. Featuring Stealth Magnet Technology and the company’s NEO supernano Diaphragm, the Edition XS produces a wide, natural soundstage that puts the listener in the best seat in the house. Edition XS from HIFIMAN brings the depth and range of well-recorded music to an affordably priced headphone.
  • Acoustically Invisible Stealth Magnet: Unlike the sound waves created by a conventional magnet, the special shape of Stealth Magnets enables the waves to pass through the magnets without generating interference. HIFIMAN’s advanced magnet design is acoustically transparent, dramatically reducing wave diffraction turbulence that degrades the integrity of the sound waves. The reduced distortion yields pure sonic output that is accurate and full-range.
  • HIFIMAN’s NEO “supernano” Diaphragm (NsD): The new NsD is 75% thinner than previous designs, resulting in fast response and detailed imaging with lush, full range sonics.
  • The Headband: The light weight, ergonomically accurate offers maximum comfort for hours of listening pleasure. The exterior is refined matte black material, and the interior features high-grade memory foam for the most comfortable fit and elasticity. The headphone’s structural design supports overall durability that retains its comfortable fit for years of enjoyment.
  • The Cable: HIFIMAN’s new 3.5mm sockets are similar to those found on most common audio devices. The supplied 3.5mm cable is user changeable and replaceable.

4. Seek model-specific help if the problem persists

Contact the headphone maker or consult the exact model’s manual if strong hiss, crackling, channel imbalance, or a change from prior behavior continues across sources and modes. A faint noise floor may be expected on some ANC models, but a new or pronounced fault should not be dismissed on that basis.

Reduce noise coming from your surroundings

ANC and physical isolation address environmental sound differently. ANC is generally most effective against steady, low-frequency noise such as engine or air-conditioning hum. Voices, abrupt sounds, and residual noise may still be audible. A good earcup seal helps ANC performance; hair, hats, glasses, or misplaced pads can compromise it. These outcomes vary by model and fit. See Sennheiser’s ANC explanation.

Closed-back headphones physically enclose the ears and can block some sound when their pads seal well. Open-back headphones do not provide the same enclosure, so they are a poor choice when passive blocking is the main goal. “Planar” describes a driver type, not whether headphones have ANC or isolate sound: HIFIMAN describes the ANANDA as open-back, while OPPO described the PM-3 as closed-back and isolation-oriented. Those construction descriptions are not a controlled comparison of noise reduction. The PM-3 is discontinued, so it should not be treated as a currently available recommendation. Choose an approach based on the problem

What you want to address Approach to consider What to expect
Hiss that changes with one phone, computer, or amplifier Compare another source and inspect connections first. If the sound follows one source, investigate that device or its output. An amplifier purchase is not an established universal fix.
Steady low-frequency room noise Consider compatible ANC headphones. ANC is better suited to repetitive low-frequency sounds; it may leave voices, sudden sounds, or some residual noise audible.
Need to block more surrounding sound without relying on ANC Consider a closed-back design with a comfortable, consistent seal. Physical isolation depends on construction, fit, and pad condition; open-back models do not provide the same enclosure.
Faint hiss only in ANC or transparency mode Compare modes and decide whether the noise is acceptable for your use. Very low-level electronics noise can be noticeable in quiet conditions, according to Sennheiser Hearing support.

There is no established comparative figure here for planar-headphone hiss prevalence, noise-floor level, or noise reduction. Compare measurements for the exact headphone and setup when available, along with required connectivity and the maker’s support terms. For ANANDA, HIFIMAN documents replaceable pads and cables; those are maintenance options, not demonstrated hiss cures. See HIFIMAN’s ANANDA guide.
