In the United States, start recreational drone flying by taking the FAA’s free TRUST test, checking whether your drone must be registered and meet Remote ID requirements, and confirming the exact airspace and site rules before every flight. These are FAA rules; other countries have different requirements, and U.S. airspace restrictions can change.
Start by confirming your flight is recreational
The FAA’s recreational exception is for flying solely for hobby or recreation and has specific requirements. If you plan to fly for business or another non-recreational purpose, review the FAA’s Getting Started guidance and the Part 107 rules before operating. TRUST or recreational registration does not authorize paid work. Part 107 operations require a Remote Pilot Certificate and aircraft registration.
Take TRUST before your first recreational flight
Recreational flyers operating under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations must pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) before flying and provide proof of passage if asked. The FAA lists approved administrators that offer the online test free. Save or print your completion certificate: test administrators do not keep a record for you, and if you lose the certificate, you must take the test again. See the FAA TRUST page.
Check registration and Remote ID for your aircraft
Registration depends on weight and operating category
The FAA’s recreational registration exemption applies to a drone weighing 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less when flown under the recreational exception. Above that threshold, registration is required. Do not assume a drone is exempt just because it is described as small. Registration under the recreational exception cannot be transferred to Part 107 operations. Check the FAA’s drone registration guidance for current requirements.

Registered drones must meet Remote ID requirements
Drones that are registered or required to be registered must comply with the FAA’s Remote ID rule. The FAA describes three ways to comply: fly a Standard Remote ID drone; attach an FAA-compliant broadcast module; or fly without Remote ID equipment within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA). If you use a broadcast module, you must keep the drone within visual line of sight. Before relying on a drone or module, check its status in the FAA’s Declaration of Compliance system through the Remote Identification of Drones page.
Check airspace and get authorization before launch
Find out whether your planned site is in controlled airspace, subject to an airspace restriction, or affected by a temporary flight restriction. The FAA directs pilots to B4UFLY for real-time airspace information. Recreational flights in controlled airspace require prior FAA authorization through LAANC or FAA DroneZone; an app or map helps you check conditions and request authorization, but does not make a restricted flight permissible on its own.

Choose the authorization route that fits your flight
- LAANC: Requests specify the planned location, time, and altitude. The FAA says requests may be submitted up to 90 days in advance; that is a submission window, not a guarantee of approval.
- FAA DroneZone: Requests are manually processed by the FAA.
Use the FAA’s airspace authorization guidance for recreational flyers and recheck conditions before each flight.
Pick a conservative place and practice within the rules
For an early practice flight, avoid crowded places and choose a site where you can maintain a clear view of the aircraft. FAA recreational guidance requires keeping the drone within visual line of sight, giving way to manned aircraft, staying within applicable altitude limits, and avoiding prohibited or restricted airspace. First-person-view equipment does not remove the visual-line-of-sight requirement. Night flying has additional lighting and safety-guideline requirements; review the current FAA guidance before attempting it.

Airspace authorization is not permission to take off or land from a particular park or private property. Check the land manager’s rules and any applicable local restrictions for the specific site. Federal FAA guidance cannot determine those local rules without a location.

Before buying or flying a particular aircraft, verify its weight and Remote ID status. If it is registered or must be registered, confirm that it has Standard Remote ID or that a compatible, FAA-accepted broadcast module is appropriate. This regulatory check does not establish camera quality, flight time, wind performance, repairability, controller feel, or value; those are separate product considerations.
