One RYOBI manual recommends storing packs used for more than 30 days at 30%–50% charge, below 80°F, and charging normally every six months; a different 40V manual gives a 50°F–100°F storage and charging range. Those are model-specific instructions, not one universal temperature rule.
How to prepare a RYOBI 40V battery for seasonal storage
- Check the battery and charger manuals. Find the model number on each item and use the instructions supplied for that battery and charger. RYOBI manuals give different temperature directions, so do not apply one model’s limits to every 40V pack.
- Remove the battery from the tool. RYOBI’s OP40754 manual says to remove the pack before storing the device. Store the battery separately rather than leaving it installed in equipment.
- Set the charge for extended storage. For storage longer than 30 days, the OP40602 operator-manual text recommends a 30%–50% state of charge. This is that manual’s instruction, not a universal recommendation for every RYOBI 40V battery. If the pack is outside that range, adjust it using the matching charger and the model’s instructions.
- Remove it from the charger when charged. Do not leave the battery on the charger through the off-season. The OP40602 long-storage passage says to charge normally every six months during storage; after charging, remove the pack from the charger.
- Choose a dry, suitable location. Keep the battery away from moisture and follow the temperature guidance for its model. Do not store it outdoors or in a vehicle where the applicable manual prohibits it.
Temperature limits depend on the manual
The OP40602 manual text recommends storage below 80°F. Separately, the OP40754 manual says not to store or charge the battery below 50°F or above 100°F, and advises against outdoor or vehicle storage. These passages describe different models; they should not be combined into a single temperature range. Check the manual for your specific pack and charger before choosing a shed, garage, or other storage location.
Keep the battery clean and undamaged
Wipe the pack with a clean cloth and keep it dry. The OP40754 manual warns against using brake fluid, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or solvents for cleaning. Do not disassemble or try to repair a damaged battery pack; follow qualified service guidance, or arrange proper recycling or disposal.
Use the matching charger and handle end-of-life packs safely
RYOBI’s manual calls for RYOBI 40V lithium-ion chargers. The official OP4011A 40V 2A charger page states that this charger is compatible with any RYOBI 40V battery, but your battery and charger manuals remain the instructions to follow. If a pack is damaged or no longer useful, do not open it or place it in ordinary household waste without checking local rules. RYOBI advises proper recycling or disposal; contact your local waste authority to find available options.
