Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou don’t have to cook every part of a meal from scratch. Pick one meal that fits the time and energy you have, check what’s already in your freezer, refrigerator, or pantry, and use a convenient component if it makes the meal easier. Keep a prepared or frozen option in reserve for days when cooking still feels like too much.
Make the next meal smaller
Start by looking through your freezer, refrigerator, and cabinets before making a shopping list. Choose one or two meals rather than trying to plan every meal for the week. A short plan can be enough: note what you’ll make, what you already have, and what you need to buy. USDA MyPlate recommends checking available food, considering how much time you have, planning for leftovers, and organizing a grocery list (MyPlate meal-planning guidance).
Choose a meal that fits the day you’re having, not an idealized version of it. A simple assembly meal can be a grain or starch, a protein, and a vegetable. For example, combine cooked rice, canned beans, and frozen vegetables, or pair leftover cooked ingredients with pasta. These are flexible combinations, not recipes you have to follow. Frozen and shelf-stable foods are useful options alongside fresh ingredients, and they can cut down on preparation.
Choose the approach that asks least of you today
| Option | What it can reduce | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| A simple meal assembled at home | Shopping and preparation, if you use ingredients already on hand | It can still involve cooking or cleanup; use convenient components where helpful. |
| Batch cooking or planned leftovers | Repeat preparation on another meal | Make a larger batch only if it feels manageable. Cool and store leftovers safely. |
| Frozen meal | Meal planning and much of the hands-on preparation | Follow package cooking directions, especially for raw or partially cooked ingredients. Check the label for vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars. |
| Meal kit or delivery | Some shopping or planning | Meal kits can still require preparation. Keep delivered perishables at 40°F or below and follow handling instructions. |
There’s no need to treat one option as better than another. FoodSafety.gov includes frozen foods among its simple options for easy meals; meal kits and delivery can also help when time or energy is limited (FoodSafety.gov’s easy-meal guidance).

Reuse work without turning meal prep into a new obligation
If it would help, prepare one useful ingredient while you already have food out: wash greens, chop a vegetable, bake potatoes, cook a grain, or marinate protein. Another option is to cook extra soup, stew, casserole, or another entrée and refrigerate or freeze individual portions. Label containers with the food and date so you can identify them later. These are choices, not a requirement to spend a day batch cooking. MyPlate’s Efficient Eats resources offer these kinds of preparation and storage ideas.
Keep the essential food-safety steps
Convenience foods still need to be handled and cooked as directed. FoodSafety.gov summarizes the basic steps as clean, separate, cook, and chill (four steps to food safety). For foods with a safe internal temperature, use a food thermometer rather than relying on appearance, touch, or cooking time alone. U.S. FoodSafety.gov guidance for new cooks lists these temperatures for the foods below; follow package directions for frozen products, which may call for a higher temperature (FoodSafety.gov temperature advice for new cooks).

- Whole cuts of beef, pork, lamb, and veal: 145°F (63°C), followed by a three-minute rest.
- Ground meats from those animals: 160°F (71°C).
- Poultry: 165°F (74°C).
Refrigerate perishable leftovers within two hours of cooking, or within one hour if they have been exposed to temperatures above 90°F (32°C). Shallow containers help food cool faster. Use cooked leftovers within four days and reheat them to 165°F (74°C). These are U.S. FoodSafety.gov recommendations; consult its cold food storage charts for storage details.
If using a slow cooker, thaw frozen meat safely before adding it; don’t thaw meat on the counter. Refrigerator, cold-water, and microwave thawing are options. If you thaw with cold water or a microwave, cook the meat immediately afterward. See FoodSafety.gov’s safe minimum internal temperature chart and food-safety guidance for details and special cases.

- Use a frozen, canned, shelf-stable, or already-cooked component to reduce preparation.
- If cooking still feels like too much, use a prepared meal, meal kit, or delivery option and follow its safe handling and cooking instructions.
