To use F-Droid, install its Android client from the official F-Droid site, let it load the app catalogue, then choose apps to install. F-Droid 2.0 checks for updates and fetches and installs them by default, while retaining manual update controls and respecting your existing preferences.
Install the F-Droid client on Android
-
On your Android device, download the client APK from the official F-Droid site.
-
Open the downloaded file. If Android asks whether to allow installation from that source, grant the permission and continue with Install, then Open. Android’s labels and prompts vary by version, so follow the prompts shown on your device.
-
On the first launch, wait while F-Droid downloads its repository catalogue. F-Droid says this can take 2 to 10 minutes, depending on connection speed.

Update apps with F-Droid 2.0
By default, F-Droid 2.0 checks for updates and fetches and installs app updates automatically. The official F-Droid announcement dated September 24, 2026, states: “F-Droid 2.0 now fetches and installs app updates by default.” Existing preferences are respected, and manual update options remain available.
If you prefer to manage updates yourself, review F-Droid’s settings and use its manual update controls. Because existing preferences carry forward, your client may not behave like a fresh installation.

Why a newer app version may not trigger an update
The newest version shown in an app’s version history is not always the version the repository recommends. A later entry may be a beta or test build, and F-Droid’s FAQ says such versions may not trigger an update notification, depending on version metadata and your settings.
-
For the repository-recommended version, use the normal update process.
-
If you want a beta or test build, open the app’s Versions list and install the version yourself, or open the app page menu and enable Allow beta updates.
Check compatibility before choosing a beta or test version; a newer listing does not guarantee it will work on your device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the current F-Droid 2.0 listing
F-Droid’s September 24, 2026 announcement describes 2.0 as a launch and says rollout would take place over the following weeks. Separately, the official F-Droid Basic package page lists version 2.0.0 (2000050), dated September 23, 2026, with a beta label. These are different statements on different official pages, so check the live F-Droid Basic package listing for its current version and status before downloading.
