To limit Meta’s use of shopping-related information, manage two separate sources: activity businesses share with Meta, and what you tell Meta AI in chats. Find Activity from other businesses to control use of off-Meta activity for personalized ads and other content. For AI-chat signals that may shape recommendations, review Meta’s ad and feed controls. Neither control is a universal delete button, and the available labels and rollout can vary by region.
How Meta can connect shopping activity to recommendations
There are two distinct routes. A business may share information about activity on its website—including a purchase—with Meta. Separately, questions you ask Meta AI can provide signals for recommendations: Meta’s example is that asking about hiking may lead to hiking-related content or ads.
Meta announced that AI interactions would begin informing content and ad recommendations on its platforms on December 16, 2025. It says those signals may be used across Meta Company Products for accounts added to the same Accounts Center. Meta’s example says an unlinked WhatsApp account’s interactions would not personalize experiences across a person’s other Meta product accounts; that example should not be treated as a rule for every account setup.
Meta reported that more than 1 billion people used Meta AI monthly in 2025. That is Meta’s own usage figure, not an independent estimate or a measure of how much shopping data it receives. Meta’s October 1, 2025 announcement describes its AI-personalization plans.

Turn off or manage activity from other businesses
For purchases and other activity shared by businesses, look for Activity from other businesses in your account’s activity or privacy controls. Meta says this setting manages whether it uses such activity to personalize both ads and non-ad content, including Feed content and AI responses. The setting was formerly called “Activity information from ad partners.”
Meta says the older Your activity off Meta technologies control is being phased out as the controls are streamlined. Its June 9, 2026 announcement says the change takes effect in the US and some other countries, with more countries to follow. Because labels and availability vary, use the setting actually shown in your account rather than relying on a fixed menu path. If you do not see the new control, check Meta’s external-activity controls update and revisit your account controls as the rollout reaches your region.

Manage recommendations based on Meta AI chats
Meta points people to Ads Preferences and feed controls to adjust the ads and content they see. Use them if you want to change recommendations related to an interest, such as shopping for a particular product category.
These are controls over what appears to you, not a promise that Meta will erase the conversation or stop every use of interaction data. Meta’s October 2025 announcement says people can adjust the content and ads they see through Ads Preferences and other feed controls. It does not describe those tools as a universal opt-out from AI-interaction data use.

Delete chat information separately
If your goal is to delete information shared in an AI chat, Meta’s generative-AI explainer identifies the command /reset-ai for Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Treat this as a way to delete information shared in a chat, not as a setting that turns off personalization from purchases shared by businesses or every use of AI interaction signals. See Meta’s generative-AI privacy explainer for its description of the command.
EU model-training objections are a different issue
Meta says it uses EU users’ interactions with Meta AI, including questions and queries, to train and improve its AI models. It describes an objection form linked from notifications for people who want to object. This concerns model training in the EU; it is not the same as changing ad preferences or managing activity sent by other businesses. Meta’s April 14, 2025 announcement, updated March 27, 2026, also says private messages with friends and family are not used to train its AIs unless someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with its AIs.

|---|---|---|
| Purchases or other activity a business shares with Meta | Activity from other businesses | It is not a way to delete an AI chat. |
| Recommendations informed by what you ask Meta AI | Ads Preferences and feed controls | Adjusting what you see is not a universal opt-out from data use. |

It is not a universal personalization setting. |
| Use of Meta AI interactions to train models in the EU | Objection form linked from Meta’s notifications | This is a regional training matter, not an ad-preference control. |
Meta’s privacy tools overview also lists Privacy Checkup, tools to manage or delete information, Off-Facebook Activity, and Ads Interests & Preferences. For external business activity, the more specific June 2026 update describes the newer control.
