Yes—if your Kindle’s exact model and firmware support a compatible screensaver modification, you can display your own images on its e-ink screen. Some methods show a set of pictures when the device sleeps; others use scripts to cycle between sleep and wake. Compatibility and setup differ substantially, so identify the Kindle before installing anything.
Check whether your Kindle is compatible
Find the exact model or generation, variant, and firmware in the Kindle’s device information. These details determine whether a jailbreak is available and which screensaver method can work. KOReader’s Kindle installation guide explains that eligibility and installation steps depend on the model, variant, firmware, and jailbreak method, and points readers to device-specific guidance: KOReader installation on Kindle devices. Its guidance, updated in August 2026, distinguishes newer package-manager installation from legacy manual installation and includes separate notes for older non-touch Kindles.
Do not assume that a method for one older Kindle applies to yours. The documented photo-frame build used a Kindle 2 International running firmware 2.x; it is an example, not a universal set of current jailbreak instructions. Its author warns that jailbreaking can brick a device. Confirm that the current instructions match your precise device and firmware before proceeding.
Choose a screensaver method

The lightweight project reports confirmed combinations of Kindle 12th Gen on firmware 5.19.6, Paperwhite 11th Gen on 5.19.2, and Paperwhite 12th Gen on 5.18.6, 5.19.5, and 5.19.6. These are reported combinations, not a guarantee for every unit or firmware. The project says other compatible devices may work, but have not yet been reported.

Firmware type can matter as well as version. KindleModding’s jailbreak FAQ says screensaver support differs between soft-float and hard-float firmware, warns that a referenced extension may fail on some final soft-float versions, and says not to install that extension under hard-float firmware. Check the instructions for your particular firmware rather than mixing packages or steps from different projects.
Prepare images for the selected method
Resize images to the screen dimensions specified by the method you install. The older photo-frame guide gives these examples for its supported device families:

These are examples from that project, not guaranteed specifications for every Kindle or screensaver modification. Check your device’s resolution and the selected method’s requirements before converting files. The older guide says its 5.x screensaver hack uses PNG, while its 2.x–4.x hack accepts PNG or JPEG.
A separate image-conversion guide describes backing up existing screensavers, checking screen resolution, cropping and resizing photos to fill the display, converting them to grayscale, and mapping them to the Kindle’s palette. This can help avoid poorly fitted images or tones the display cannot reproduce.

Transfer images and activate the display
Transfer instructions belong to the method you installed. For the older project, images are copied over USB into linkss/screensavers, then the Kindle is rebooted. That guide also describes putting a file named random in the linkss folder to randomize the selected screensaver after reboot. Do not use these paths or steps for a different package unless its own documentation specifies them.
The conversion guide recommends restarting after uploading images because the screensaver rotation may be loaded into memory rather than rescanned while the Kindle is running. Follow the restart or activation procedure for your chosen project.

Know what “rotation” means for your setup
A collection of sleep-screen images is not necessarily a continuously advancing slideshow. The lightweight scriptlet supports multiple PNG images when the Kindle sleeps, but you must launch it, and it does not launch automatically after a reboot. The older build uses custom scripts to respond to power-state events and toggle between active and screensaver states after an interval. Its author notes that background scripts stop when the Kindle sleeps, so that implementation defers suspension and schedules wake behavior. That is a project-specific workaround, not a built-in Kindle slideshow feature.

The older build mounts the Kindle in a wooden frame with double-sided tape and a side opening for the charging cable. Its Kindle 2 International connects to a computer by microUSB. Other Kindle models may have a different connector or need a different frame and cable route, so check the port and mounting clearance on your own device before building around it.

The build discusses continuous power versus occasional charging as design choices, but it does not establish battery life, long-term reliability, or a measured power result. A frame should leave access to the charging port and avoid putting pressure on the screen or controls.
