If floodwater is entering your home, get people and pets away from it, follow evacuation orders, and do not walk through the water or touch electrical equipment. Turn off utilities only if you can reach their controls from a dry, safe place. Reenter only after authorities say it is safe; then check for hazards, document damage, and begin cleanup once electrical and other risks have been addressed.
What to do while floodwater is entering
- Move people and pets to safety. Follow local emergency alerts and evacuation directions. Do not walk or drive through floodwater: it can sweep people and vehicles away and may contain sewage, chemicals, or other hazards. See the CDC floodwater safety guidance.
- Leave utilities alone if controls are not safely reachable. Turn off gas, power, and water only if you can reach the controls from a dry location without approaching the water. If the electrical panel is in or beyond standing water, do not enter to reach it; contact an electrician or your utility provider. Never use a wet electrical device or operate an appliance or tool while standing in water. The CDC guidance for reentering a flooded home explains these precautions.
- If you smell gas, leave immediately. Do not switch lights on or off, use a phone inside, or operate anything that could create a spark. Once safely away, notify the gas company or emergency authorities. Do not return until they say it is safe.
- Do not move propane tanks in or near floodwater. Contact emergency authorities instead.
When and how to reenter
Wait for local authorities to say the home is safe to enter. If possible, go in during daylight and use a battery-powered flashlight or lantern—not household lighting, candles, or an open flame. Watch for structural damage and other hazards as you enter. A flooded home may be contaminated with sewage, and a home closed for several days should be assumed to have mold. If it has been closed for several days, the CDC advises opening doors and windows and airing it briefly before staying inside.
Electrical hazards
If standing water remains, never enter it to reach a breaker. Have an electrician inspect the electrical system before power is restored. Do not switch power on or operate electrical equipment while standing in water. If you cannot confirm power is safe, postpone pumping and powered cleanup equipment.
Document damage before cleanup
When it is safe and feasible, contact your insurer and photograph damage to the home and belongings before removing or cleaning items. Coverage and claim deadlines depend on your policy and jurisdiction; the CDC’s returning-home guidance recommends documenting damage, but it does not determine your policy’s terms.

How to remove water and dry the home safely
Use a pump or wet-dry shop vacuum only after an electrician has confirmed that electricity is safe. The CDC lists a wet-dry vacuum, water-transfer pump, or sump pump as possible ways to remove standing water under that condition. Do not use powered equipment while standing in water.
Open windows and doors if weather permits. Use fans and dehumidifiers to remove moisture; position fans at a window or door to blow air outward, which the CDC says helps avoid spreading mold. Do not turn on a flooded HVAC system until a service professional experienced in mold cleanup has checked and cleaned it.

Discard or clean items appropriately
- Discard food that touched floodwater.
- Clean hard floors, walls, and other washable surfaces with soap and water.
- Throw away porous items that cannot be disinfected, including wall coverings, cloth, rugs, and drywall.
- Follow local drinking-water guidance. If flooding affected a private well, have it tested before using the water. Clear-looking water is not proof that it is safe.
Dry promptly
The CDC’s public guidance recommends drying or removing wet items within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth. Remove wet materials or begin drying as soon as conditions are safe; do not risk electrical injury to meet a drying target.
