Start by checking those details, then choose between a simple page in the built-in browser, a periodically updated image, or a community project that adds an interactive or custom display. Examples exist for particular Kindle configurations; they do not establish compatibility across the whole Kindle family.
Choose a dashboard approach
Decide first whether the Kindle needs to show information only or let you control devices. The simpler the display, the more likely an older browser or e-ink workflow will be adequate. More interactive approaches can involve additional software, configuration, and device-specific constraints.

Check the Kindle before choosing software
Find the device generation or model and current firmware in the Kindle’s settings or device-information screen. Also note screen orientation, whether the display is touch-enabled, and the charging connector. A guide or project that works on one Kindle is not evidence that it will work on another.
Amazon’s older Kindle User’s Guide, 2nd Edition describes an experimental browser for that guide’s device generation. That is useful context, not a promise that every older Kindle can load a modern service. Home Assistant’s current interface may be too demanding or incompatible with an older browser. A pared-back page with high contrast, large type, a few panels, and no reliance on modern scripting is a sensible first test, not a manufacturer requirement.

Try a simple page in the stock browser
If you only need a clock, weather, or a few household readings, try a simple page before modifying the Kindle. Open the experimental browser if your model provides one, then test a local page or the exact dashboard address you intend to use. Whether a particular address loads depends on the Kindle’s browser, network access, and the page itself.
Keep the layout sparse: black text on a white background, large labels, few columns, and modest refreshes. Before mounting the device, confirm that the page remains readable and that it reconnects or refreshes as expected. The kindle-dash project demonstrates a browser-based Home Assistant display with weather/calendar data and touch controls in a specific configuration: a Paperwhite 1 running firmware 5.3.x. That project-specific result should not be generalized to other models or firmware.

Use a generated image for a read-only panel
A static image can avoid asking an old browser to render a complex web application. The Home Assistant Lovelace Kindle Screensaver project describes taking a Home Assistant Lovelace view, converting it to a grayscale PNG, and making the image available through a jailbroken Kindle screensaver workflow. It requires a rendering host or container and configuration; follow the project’s own instructions for its current implementation and supported setup.
This route suits information you want to glance at rather than control. Check how the project updates the image, what extensions or jailbreak it needs, and how to return the Kindle to normal use before committing to a permanent installation. An older Home Assistant Community thread, “Home Assistant dashboard on Kindle”, describes polling a PNG; treat that as a historical example rather than a current installation recipe.

Consider an interactive or custom project only when needed
Community projects show that a Kindle can be adapted for more than a static image, but they demand closer compatibility checks. The kindle-dash project combines a browser display with Home Assistant and is deliberately tailored to older WebKit. The separate Kindle Dashboard project draws directly to the framebuffer on an Oasis 3; its coordinates and lifecycle behavior should not be assumed to apply to other models.
Some kiosk, screensaver, and direct-rendering workflows require a jailbreak; the cited material does not establish that every browser-based display does. The Home Assistant Community’s September 2026 guide, “Controlling Home Assistant with a Kindle”, discusses browser use and jailbreak-related screensaver behavior. It is community guidance, not official Amazon support. Verify any jailbreak guidance against the exact Kindle model and firmware before proceeding, and do not follow instructions meant for a different device.

Set it up and test it before mounting
- Record the device details. Note the Kindle model or generation, firmware, orientation, touch capability, and charging connector from the device information and your own inspection.
- Decide what the display must do. For information only, try a simple page or investigate an image workflow. For touch controls or custom rendering, identify a project that explicitly targets your model and firmware.
- Test the simplest version first. Start with a small local page or the intended dashboard address. Check legibility, loading, and the behavior you expect after a refresh or Wi-Fi interruption.
- Check the whole Home Assistant route. If using Home Assistant, test the exact dashboard address on the Kindle and verify refresh and reconnection before installation. Keep credentials out of untrusted pages. The proxy-side token handling described by kindle-dash is a project-specific design, not a security guarantee for other setups.
- Validate any modification separately. If your chosen image, screensaver, kiosk, or rendering method requires a jailbreak, confirm that the current instructions match your exact model and firmware and understand the documented recovery path before making changes.
- Run it on a desk before fixing it in place. Check Wi-Fi reach, orientation, contrast, wake/sleep behavior, and whether the device can remain charged in your intended location.
- Confirm the physical installation. Consult the guide for your particular Kindle to verify charging and cable compatibility, and measure the device before selecting a mount. Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite User’s Guide is model-specific; it does not establish one cable or mount as suitable for every Kindle.

The dashboard and jailbreak examples described here are community-built; the cited sources do not establish official Amazon support for modifying or repurposing a Kindle. Avoid exposing Home Assistant directly to the public internet or entering sensitive credentials into a page or project you do not trust.
