Choose a tree that suits your local climate and planting site, set its root flare level with or slightly above the surrounding soil, and keep the root ball moist—not waterlogged—as it establishes. During the first year, check soil conditions and adjust for rain, drainage, heat, and local water rules rather than following a universal watering calendar.
Choose a tree and site that suit each other
Before buying, consider your region’s climate, the soil, the space available, and the tree’s mature size. A tree that is poorly matched to its location can create problems long after planting. If you are unsure about your soil or site, ask a local nursery or extension service for advice. The Oregon State University Extension tree-planting guide offers region-specific guidance; local conditions elsewhere may call for different choices and care.
Plant the tree at the right depth
Find the root flare before digging
The root flare is where the trunk widens and transitions into the upper roots. It may be hidden beneath loose soil or growing medium in the container or root ball. Gently remove enough material to locate it before planting. The root collar should finish level with or slightly above the surrounding ground, not buried beneath it.
Make a wide, shallow hole
- Dig a hole at least twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper than the root ball. The University of Maryland Extension recommends this proportion.
- Leave firm soil beneath the root ball so the tree is less likely to settle too low after planting.
- Set the tree upright and check the root flare against the surrounding grade. Adjust the hole or the tree’s position before backfilling if the flare would be buried.
- Backfill around the root ball and firm the soil enough to remove large air pockets without heavily compacting it.
- Water thoroughly to settle the soil and moisten the root ball and surrounding soil.
Iowa State Extension also recommends locating the root collar at or slightly above grade and making the planting hole broad rather than deep: How to plant a tree.

Water according to soil conditions, not a universal calendar
New trees need supplemental water while their roots establish, but the right interval depends on rainfall, heat, soil texture, drainage, tree size, and local restrictions. Recommendations vary by region, so do not assume a fixed weekly amount applies everywhere. Check both the root ball and nearby soil; soil can be dry in one area and still moist in another.
- Check beneath the mulch and into the root ball for dryness before watering. Maryland Extension describes checking both locations in its tree and shrub planting guidance.
- When the root zone is drying, water slowly and thoroughly so moisture reaches the root ball and the surrounding soil. A hose set to a slow trickle is one practical option.
- Account for recent rain, hot or windy weather, and how quickly the soil drains. Reduce or delay supplemental watering when the root zone remains wet.
- Follow local watering restrictions and seek locally appropriate advice if you are unsure how often to irrigate.
For context, the University of Florida IFAS gives a more frequent irrigation schedule for initial establishment in Florida, followed by weekly watering until establishment. That regional schedule is not a general prescription for other climates. Oregon State University likewise emphasizes routine, thorough watering whose frequency depends on soil and weather, in its Oregon guidance.

Mulch the root zone, keeping it off the trunk
Organic mulch helps conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds around a newly planted tree. Spread it over the root zone, but leave space around the trunk and root flare. Mulch piled against the trunk can contribute to disease, insect, rodent, and root problems, as UNH Extension explains.
Recommended mulch depths differ among sources and regions. Use local extension advice for the appropriate depth and mulch type, and check local wildfire guidance where relevant. Keep the trunk flare visible rather than building mulch into a volcano shape. Texas A&M Forest Service also advises keeping mulch clear of the trunk: Tree planting.

Stake only when the tree needs support, and prune lightly
Use stakes for stability, not by default
Stake a tree only if it cannot remain stable on its own or the site exposes it to conditions that make support necessary. Use flexible ties that allow some movement, and remove the stakes and ties once support is no longer needed—generally within the first year. The University of Florida IFAS discusses stake removal within one year in its Florida establishment guidance.
Keep establishment pruning limited
At planting, remove dead or damaged branches and address branches that cross or rub. Avoid severe pruning: retaining healthy leaf area supports the tree as it establishes. Iowa State Extension advises against heavy pruning that unnecessarily reduces leaf area in its planting guidance.

What to keep doing after the first year
Reaching the end of the first year does not necessarily mean a tree is fully established or no longer needs attention. Texas A&M Forest Service recommends watering for at least two years in its guidance, while Oregon State University’s recommendations also extend regular watering beyond year one in its Oregon context. Continue checking soil moisture and adapt care to local climate, rainfall, and the tree’s condition rather than treating the calendar as proof that establishment is complete.
