For authoritative U.S. election results, start with the relevant state election website listed by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), then check the local election office for county, city, and other local contests. A reputable newsroom results page can help you follow updates and understand race calls, but election-night totals are unofficial and a newsroom projection is not official certification.
Where do I find election results?
-
Open the EAC’s Where do I find election results? page and select the state or territory election website. The EAC is a guide to election information, not the authority that certifies your results.
-
For county, city, and municipal contests, follow the relevant local election office’s results page and notices. Local officials provide jurisdiction-specific updates; the procedures and schedules can differ from one place to another.
-
If you want a live overview or analysis, use a news organization’s results page as a companion. Check how it obtains and labels results, and use the election office—not the newsroom—to establish whether results are official and certified.

This is a U.S.-specific guide. The EAC voter FAQ says the country has more than 10,000 election jurisdictions, so there is no single national reporting schedule or one office that supplies every local result.
Are election-night results final?
No. Election-night figures are preliminary, unofficial results. Eligible ballots may still need to be counted, including provisional, absentee, mail, military, and overseas ballots. The EAC explains that final results may take days or weeks, depending on the jurisdiction and the ballots and procedures involved.
After initial reporting, officials conduct a canvass to aggregate and confirm valid ballots and reconcile ballot and voter records. Officials then certify results, attesting that they are an accurate accounting of votes cast. The authority responsible and the steps and deadlines vary by state and, in some cases, by local jurisdiction. Consult the applicable election office for its calendar.
Why are votes still being counted?
Election-night reporting is not necessarily a count of every eligible ballot. Officials may continue processing and counting ballots after polls close, and the canvass checks that records and totals reconcile. A later update can reflect newly counted ballots, a batch of results, reconciliation, or a correction; look for an explanation from the election office when a figure changes.

Post-election checks have different purposes:
-
Canvass: Aggregates and confirms valid ballots, with checks that ballots and voter records reconcile.
-
Audit: Checks tabulation accuracy. The EAC says audits review paper ballots to confirm machine-count accuracy; methods and timing vary.
-
Recount: Counts ballots in a contest or part of one again under applicable rules. State law governs when a recount occurs, and unlike an audit, a recount can change official results.
For the applicable process and whether a recount is possible, consult the election office responsible for that contest. The EAC’s Voter FAQs explain why results can change and how final results are determined.

How should I read a news results page?
Read the status labels before drawing conclusions. The Associated Press (AP) says it gathers results from precincts and county election offices, checks them against county and state websites and election-official data feeds, and uses human checks, automated tests, and analyst review. That describes AP’s reporting process; it does not make its tally an official certification.
-
Preliminary or unofficial: Results are still subject to continued counting and the official canvass.
-
Precincts reporting: This may not show what share of all ballots has been counted. Early voting, mail ballots, and partial precinct reporting can make the percentage misleading.
-
Expected vote: AP describes this as an estimate of total turnout, refined as actual returns arrive. It can fluctuate and is not a count of ballots already reported.

-
Too close to call: The available count does not yet establish a winner. It is not, on its own, evidence of wrongdoing.
-
Race called or projected: A newsroom’s assessment that the trailing candidate no longer has a path to victory. AP says it calls a race when it is confident trailing candidates cannot catch the leader. A call is not certification by election officials.
-
Certified or final: An official status determined through the jurisdiction’s canvass and certification process. Check the election office for the authoritative status and applicable records.
A strong lead or a high “precincts reporting” figure alone does not show that all ballots are counted or that a winner has been officially certified.

What to check when results differ between sources
Compare like with like: the same contest, jurisdiction, reporting time, and result status. A newsroom’s live tally and an election office’s certified result may differ because they represent different stages or update schedules.
-
Check whether each page labels the figures as preliminary, estimated, called, or certified.
-
Look at the geographic scope: statewide totals, county results, and precinct-level returns are not interchangeable.
-
Read the update notes for newly counted ballot types, added batches, reconciliation, or corrections.

For final status, certification, recount rules, and deadlines, follow the election office responsible for that contest.
State law and local administration shape counting, reporting, audits, recounts, and certification. Confirm the rules for the specific jurisdiction rather than assuming another state’s schedule applies.
