To cancel a Costco membership, the primary member can visit the membership counter at any Costco warehouse or call Member Services at 1-800-774-2678. To downgrade, contact a warehouse membership desk or call Member Services. Costco says these transactions cannot be completed online or through live chat.
Cancel your membership
Costco’s U.S. cancellation guidance, published July 24, 2025, says the primary member can request cancellation in either of these ways:
- At a warehouse: Ask at the membership counter. Costco says a team member can provide an immediate refund there. Find a location with Costco’s warehouse locator.
- By phone: Call 1-800-774-2678 and speak with a live agent. Costco does not specify a phone refund timeline.
If you are not the primary member, the published cancellation instructions do not establish that you can make the request. Contact Costco to confirm who must be present or call.
Downgrade your membership
For a downgrade, visit the membership desk at a local warehouse or call Member Services. Costco’s guidance says transaction-required membership changes cannot be completed through Costco.com or live chat, so online account settings and chat are not alternatives for finishing the downgrade.

What Executive members should clarify
If you have an Executive membership, ask the Costco representative to calculate how your current upgrade fee and any issued or accrued 2% Reward would be handled before you cancel or downgrade. Costco’s indexed help result says an Executive member must cancel or downgrade to Gold Star or Business to receive a refund of the current upgrade fee; it also says rewards may be subtracted and forfeited to the extent they exceed that refund. That result does not establish an individual member’s refund amount, so confirm your specific calculation with Member Services.
