Google does not provide a setting to turn off AI Overviews in core Search. For a search without them, choose Web in the results filters; this displays text-based links for that search. The separate Search Labs switch for AI in Search controls experiments, not core AI Overviews.
Why am I seeing an AI Overview?
Google says its systems show AI Overviews when they determine generative AI may be especially helpful—for example, when a searcher wants to understand information from a range of sources quickly. That does not mean an overview will appear for every query. Availability is also limited to the countries, territories, and languages on Google’s current list. Check Google’s AI Overviews availability information for current coverage; Google notes that Search settings and experiences may change and can vary by region, language, account, or device.
What sources does an AI Overview use?
Google describes an AI Overview as an AI-generated snapshot of key information with links to dig deeper. Those links lead to supporting web information, but Google’s Help guidance does not set out a complete source-selection or ranking formula. The links should not be treated as an exhaustive disclosure of every input used to generate the summary, or as proof that Google has independently validated every statement on the linked pages. See Google’s explanation of AI Overviews.
Can I turn off AI Overviews?
No full off switch for core AI Overviews is documented. Google Search Help says, “Features cannot be turned off,” in reference to AI Overviews as a core Search feature. Its built-in alternative is to select Web on the results page. Depending on the interface, Web may appear in the filter row or under More. It shows text-based links without features such as AI Overviews for the current results view; it is not a persistent setting that disables overviews across Search. Google’s guidance is at Google Search Help.

What does the Search Labs “AI in Search” switch do?
The Labs control is for participation in Search Labs experiments, not a switch for core AI Overviews. Google says core AI Overviews remain part of Search even if you opt out of the experiment.
- On a computer, sign in to the Google Account used for the experiment and make sure Incognito is off.
- Open a new tab and select Labs, then Manage.
- Turn off AI in Search.
Google’s instructions and distinction between Labs experiments and core Search features are described in its Search Help guidance.

Are AI Overviews always accurate?
No. Google warns that AI responses, including AI Overviews, can contain mistakes. For important information, follow the overview’s links, compare other Search results, and check more than one source before relying on a claim. Google also invites users to send feedback when an overview appears wrong.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I report an inaccurate AI Overview?
Use the thumbs-down control on the overview and choose Report a problem, then describe the issue and submit. Google also documents a feedback route in the overview’s three-dot menu. Its Help page notes that submitted feedback includes your most recent search query and its results. See Google’s feedback instructions.
