CVE-2025-54309 was exploited in July 2025 to gain administrative access through CrushFTP’s HTTP(S) web interface. CrushFTP says version 10.8.5 and later releases in the 10.8.5 line are safe for this issue; for version 11, it identifies releases below 11.3.4_23 as affected and says 11.3.5 and later are safe. Check your exact build, install a fixed release using CrushFTP’s current update instructions, and investigate for signs of access: patching does not prove the server was never compromised.
What happened in the CrushFTP zero-day incident?
CrushFTP reported first seeing exploitation on July 18, 2025, at 9 a.m. Central Standard Time, while allowing that attacks may have begun earlier. CERT-EU’s July 24, 2025 advisory says attackers used the software’s HTTP(S) web interface to gain administrative access on vulnerable servers.
CrushFTP linked the vulnerability to an earlier code change related to AS2 over HTTP(S). The vendor said attackers appeared to reverse engineer that change and find a way to exploit the earlier bug. The cited advisories describe administrative access; they do not establish remote code execution as the outcome. The GitHub Advisory Database lists a CVSS v3 base severity score of 9.0 out of 10. That score indicates severity, not the number of affected servers or victims.
Is my CrushFTP server vulnerable to CVE-2025-54309?
Compare the installed major branch and exact build against the affected ranges given in CrushFTP’s incident advisory. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security repeats the lower boundaries.

Verify the complete version and build shown by your installation rather than relying on the major version alone. For version 11, 11.3.5 or later is the clearest vendor-stated safe target. The vendor’s advisory says, “Anyone who had kept up to date was spared from this exploit.” Treat that as CrushFTP’s statement about this issue, not as a substitute for checking your own build and access history.
What should I do if the installed build is affected?
- Confirm the exact build. Check the version and build reported by the CrushFTP installation and compare it with the table above.
- Update using CrushFTP’s current instructions. Install a release the vendor identifies as safe for your branch, following the vendor’s update guidance. Do not treat an update as evidence that no one accessed the server before it was patched.
- Check for compromise indicators. Review the user configuration, accounts, web interface, hashes, and transfer reports listed below, including after the update.
- Escalate if anything is suspicious. Use current CrushFTP support and recovery guidance if you find unexpected admin access, account changes, or transfers.
Does using a DMZ CrushFTP instance change the risk?
CrushFTP says enterprise customers with a DMZ CrushFTP instance in front of the main server are not affected. CERT-EU uses more cautious wording: such enterprise customers are “not believed to be affected.” This assessment applies to the described architecture; it is not a universal guarantee for every DMZ deployment or a reason to skip build verification.

How do I check whether my server was compromised?
CrushFTP lists the following potential indicators. An individual indicator warrants investigation; it is not, by itself, proof of compromise.
- The default user’s
user.XMLcontainslast_loginsor has a recent modification date. - The default user unexpectedly has administrative access.
- Unrecognized, long, random-looking user IDs or other recently created accounts have admin privileges.
- Buttons have disappeared from the end-user web interface, or an ordinary user can see an Admin button.
- The displayed version appears falsified. CrushFTP recommends using the validate hashes function on the About tab to compare MD5 hashes and look for added code.
- Upload or download reports show unexpected transfers.
Review the reports for transfers you cannot account for, and investigate unexpected account or file changes rather than relying on the version display alone.

What if I find signs of compromise?
CrushFTP’s incident-specific guidance is to restore a pre-exploit default user from the backup folder to the users directory. Alternatively, delete the default user and let the server recreate it if losing its previous customizations is acceptable. Review upload and download reports for files that may have been transferred, and contact current CrushFTP support for guidance tailored to the installation.
The vendor recommends considering a restore point from before July 16, 2025, because attacks may have started before they were detected on July 18. This is a recommendation tied to the 2025 incident, not a guarantee that restoring that point alone resolves every compromise. Preserve relevant evidence and get incident-response help if the server held sensitive data or the scope of access is unclear.
