Asylo is an open-source framework and SDK Google Cloud announced in 2018 to help developers build applications that use trusted execution environments (TEEs), particularly enclaves. Its goal was to give developers a common programming and tooling layer for enclave-based applications. Intel SGX was the concrete hardware backend described at launch; support for AMD SEV and other backends was discussed as a future possibility, not delivered support for every TEE.
What confidential computing and enclaves do
Confidential computing aims to protect data while it is being processed, not only while it is stored or transmitted. A TEE provides a protected execution environment—often called an enclave—for selected code and data. The intended benefit is to reduce the ability of a compromised host operating system or hypervisor to inspect or tamper with the workload inside that environment.
An enclave does not secure an entire application by itself. Developers must decide which components and data belong inside the protected boundary, account for the security properties of the chosen hardware backend, and consider how the application communicates with code outside the enclave.
What Google announced in 2018
Google Cloud announced Asylo on May 3, 2018. The announcement described an open-source framework intended to make it easier to protect application and data confidentiality and integrity in a confidential-computing environment. Google presented three advantages: developers would not need to adopt an entirely new programming model or rewrite all their code; a common layer could make it easier to port applications across enclave backends; and the framework was open source. The announcement referred to Asylo 0.2. Read the launch announcement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The launch post also described a Docker image distributed through Google Container Registry, intended to package dependencies and a custom toolchain. It named Intel SGX and AMD SEV as technologies being explored for future backend support. Its statement that users would soon be able to run existing applications in an enclave was a roadmap, not evidence that the capability was generally available at launch.
What the documented Asylo workflow included
The project repository describes an API, libraries, tools, ready-to-use containers, backend selection, and source portability across security backends. It documents C++17 application support beginning with release 0.4 and a Bazel build environment. Its sample workflow uses an asylo-examples workspace and can run a hello_world target against a simulated SGX enclave backend. The Asylo repository contains the project and its documentation.

Running an example versus using SGX hardware
A simulated SGX backend is useful for exercising the example workflow, but it is not the same as running an enclave on SGX hardware. For the hardware path, the repository says the container needs access to the SGX device and the host’s AESM socket. The SGX hardware release guide says hardware support arrived in v0.3.0 and documents Bazel rules for compiling an unsigned enclave, generating signing material, and producing a signed enclave. A release configuration must disable debug mode; the guide also requires a public key and signature material. See the SGX hardware release-enclave guide.
How much portability Asylo offered
Portability was an architectural aim: developers could build against a common layer and select among supported security backends rather than binding all application code directly to one backend. That goal should not be read as a guarantee that an application could move unchanged to any TEE. At launch, Intel SGX was the described backend, while AMD SEV and other hardware were possibilities under exploration. Backend capabilities and application-specific dependencies still determine how much code can move.

Google’s 2019 discussion described Asylo as hardware-agnostic in design and said it supported both broad and narrower approaches to enclave use. Putting a whole application in an enclave can increase the trusted computing base (TCB)—the code and components that must be trusted. Protecting only sensitive components can reduce that footprint, but requires careful boundaries and communication between protected and unprotected parts. Google’s 2019 article on Asylo and confidential computing discusses these trade-offs.
Security limits and support status
Enclaves can reduce exposure to privileged host-level access, but they are not an automatic security guarantee. The design must account for the enclave boundary, the selected backend’s properties, and how the application verifies and communicates with protected workloads. Google’s 2019 article noted that practices, risk trade-offs, and performance implications were still developing. It also discussed unresolved interoperability needs, including ways to verify remote-attestation claims, communicate between enclaves, and support federated identity.

The repository explicitly says, “This is not an officially supported Google product.” It also cautions that backend support is not an endorsement of that backend’s security properties; users should evaluate whether a backend meets their requirements and use defense in depth. The repository’s generic “under active development” wording does not, by itself, establish present-day maintenance status, so current maintenance should not be assumed from that phrase. The availability of the published container image and compatibility with particular SGX systems are likewise not established here.

Google’s May 2019 Confidential Computing Challenge results described several projects using Asylo or related ideas. TF Trusted combined Asylo and TensorFlow Lite to run machine-learning inference inside an Intel SGX device, with the stated aim of protecting the model and input vector from the host. PrivateLearn was presented as a privacy-preserving recommendation-system approach, and GeneCrypt as a project using Asylo and SGX concepts to filter genomic data. These were challenge projects or demonstrations, not proof of commercial deployment or independent security validation. See Google’s challenge results announcement.
