Google Wifi and Nest Wifi are both dual-band Wi-Fi 5 mesh systems managed in the Google Home app. Nest Wifi adds a faster-rated router and smart-speaker capability in its points; Google Wifi points include Ethernet ports. Neither is Wi-Fi 6, and Nest Wifi Pro is a separate Wi-Fi 6E system that cannot mesh with either. Google no longer sells these older systems directly, so verify the model, condition, and included units before buying.
Google Wifi vs. Nest Wifi: what’s the difference?
The main differences are the router specifications, point features, and Ethernet ports. Google Wifi is AC1200; the Nest Wifi router is AC2200. Both are dual-band Wi-Fi 5 systems, not Wi-Fi 6. Google describes Nest Wifi as faster and providing more coverage than Google Wifi, but the official specifications do not provide a controlled head-to-head speed or coverage test.

These are older product generations, so a marketplace listing may be new, refurbished, or used, and its included devices can vary. Check the exact model and whether the package contains a router and the number of points you need. Google’s comparison page states: “Important: Nest Wifi and Google Wifi are no longer sold by Google.”
How much area does a Google Wifi point cover?
Google lists coverage of up to 1,500 square feet per Google Wifi point in its technical specifications. Treat that as an estimate, not a promise for a particular home. Walls, building materials, layout, broadband service, and where points are placed all affect real coverage. Google cautions that larger homes and homes with thick walls or long, narrow layouts may need additional points.

Google’s planning guidance for Nest Wifi uses bedrooms rather than a directly comparable square-foot figure: it suggests a standalone router for a one-to-two-bedroom home, a router plus one point for a two-to-three-bedroom home, and a router plus two points for a home with three or more bedrooms. These are planning categories, not a guarantee of signal quality in every room.
Coverage and internet speed are related but different. A mesh point can improve Wi-Fi reach, but speed at a device also depends on its capabilities, distance, frequency, and physical barriers. If a connection is weak, Google recommends moving the device closer, choosing a more open location for the point, and checking placement with a mesh test. See Google’s Wi-Fi speed guidance.

Does Nest Wifi have a speaker?
Yes, the Nest Wifi point includes a speaker and voice assistant. The Nest Wifi router does not have a speaker. Google Wifi points do not include this smart-speaker feature. If you want voice-assistant functionality, make sure a listing includes a Nest Wifi point rather than assuming that every Nest Wifi unit has a speaker. Can I use Google Wifi points with Nest Wifi?
Yes. Google lists Google Wifi points as compatible with a Nest Wifi network, and Nest Wifi routers and points as compatible with Google Wifi points. That makes Nest Wifi a possible expansion option for an existing Google Wifi setup, but check the exact model before buying. Nest Wifi Pro is a different Wi-Fi 6E generation and cannot join either of these older systems.

Which units have Ethernet ports?
Google Wifi points have two Gigabit Ethernet ports. A Nest Wifi router has WAN and LAN Ethernet ports, while a Nest Wifi point has no Ethernet ports. Check which device in a bundle is the router and which is a point if you need a wired connection; the names do not mean every unit has the same ports.
For additional wired LAN connections, Google says an Ethernet switch can connect to a Google Wifi point or a Nest Wifi router. Google recommends an unmanaged switch, or configuring a managed switch appropriately. A switch adds wired ports; it does not extend wireless coverage. Follow Google’s Ethernet-switch instructions.

How do you set up Google Wifi or Nest Wifi?
Both systems use the Google Home app. Start with a working modem connected to the internet, then use the app to set up the router and add points. For a stronger signal, Google recommends placing the router in plain view at about eye level rather than hiding it in a cabinet or setting it on the floor.
- Confirm that your modem is working and connected to the internet.
- Connect the mesh router to the modem, then open the Google Home app and follow its setup prompts.
- Place additional points where they can communicate well with the router and the areas needing coverage; use the app’s mesh test to check placement.
Google advises buying Wifi devices in the country where they will be used because wireless regulations vary. Using a device across countries can create compatibility issues or limit Google support. See Google’s setup guidance.
