Fused deposition modeling (FDM) turns a digital 3D model into a solid object by feeding thermoplastic filament through a heated nozzle and depositing it in successive layers. The material cools and bonds as the printer follows paths created by slicing software; some shapes also require temporary supports.

How the FDM printing process works

FDM is a form of material extrusion: instead of carving a part from a larger block, the printer adds softened plastic where the digital plan calls for it. The process runs from a model to sliced paths, filament feed, extrusion and layer-by-layer construction.

  1. Create a 3D model. A CAD model describes the part’s intended shape. Build-preparation software slices that geometry into layers and generates the toolpaths the printer will follow. Stratasys describes this toolpath-generation and slicing stage.
  2. Feed the filament. A spool supplies continuous thermoplastic filament to the printer’s extrusion head. A feed mechanism advances it toward the hot end.
  3. Heat and extrude. The hot end heats the filament until it can flow through the nozzle. The nozzle deposits a continuous strand along a controlled path. Steady material feed and coordinated movement help the printer lay down the intended strand.
  4. Build the part in layers. After depositing one layer, the printer positions the next path above it. The strand cools and solidifies, while successive layers fuse together to form the object. The U.S. Department of Energy’s overview also describes 3D printing as building an object layer by layer.

When a print needs support

Overhangs and other geometry that cannot be built directly may need temporary support beneath or around them. Some printers can deposit a second, sometimes dissolvable, material for support, often using a separate nozzle. This is an optional capability, not a requirement of every FDM printer or every part. The Royal Society of Chemistry discusses support materials in its introduction to 3D printing.

What FDM and FFF mean

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) and fused filament fabrication (FFF) refer to this family of processes that extrudes thermoplastic filament through a nozzle. HP notes that FDM is a trademarked term and FFF is an untrademarked equivalent term in its introduction to 3D printing processes.

Filament and printer compatibility

FDM printers can use different thermoplastics, including ABS, nylon and polycarbonate, but a material name alone does not tell you whether it will work in a particular machine. Printer designs and material compatibility vary, so check the printer maker’s supported-material guidance before choosing filament. Operating temperatures and other settings are not universal; they depend on both the printer and the material. The American Chemical Society’s introductory guide likewise addresses the relationship between printer design and material requirements.
