Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To make a respectful wrestling tribute video, build it around the wrestler’s work and the memories fans associate with it, check the family’s public wishes, and use footage, photos, and music only when you have permission or a defensible legal basis. A tribute is not automatically fair use, and an unofficial edit should never imply that the wrestler’s family or promotion endorses it.
Plan the tribute before you edit
Decide who will watch the video and where it will appear. A private viewing, memorial service, and public social-media upload have different audiences; public posting can also raise platform and copyright issues. Decide whether you intend to monetize it, because a music or image license may not cover monetized use.
Choose one clear focus, such as career highlights, a tag-team partnership, a particular era, signature performances, or what fans remember about the wrestler. Keep the person’s work and personality at the center. Avoid making family grief, tragedy, or unverified claims the spectacle. Do not state an allegation or cause of death as fact unless reliable sources support it.
Check family privacy and use of sensitive material
Look for public guidance from the wrestler’s family or estate, and treat it as specific to that family rather than assuming every family has the same wishes. Do not repost private funeral material just because it was accessible on a fan or family page.

For example, a July 9, 2024 PWMania report reproduced a request attributed to the Anoa’i family after footage from Sika Anoa’i’s funeral circulated online. The family distinguished a shared photo from funeral footage and asked that funeral videos remain private. WWE’s April 18, 2017 article about Rosey also reproduced a family request to respect the privacy of his children and family as they mourned. These examples support checking the particular family’s boundaries; they do not establish a universal policy. Read the PWMania report and WWE’s Rosey article.
Audit footage, photos, logos, and recordings
Make an asset list before editing. For each clip, photo, logo, song, or recording, note who created it, who owns it, where you obtained it, and whether your permission or license covers editing and your intended distribution. A credit line identifies a source; it does not grant permission.

WWE’s copyright and trademark notice says its event and television text, photographs, video, audio, and audiovisual programs are protected, and that displaying, copying, or making derivative works without permission violates its stated rights. This is WWE’s position on its materials, not a ruling about every fan edit and not a statement of another promotion’s policy. Check the relevant promotion’s own terms and seek permission when needed. Read WWE’s copyright and trademark notice.
Do not assume a tribute qualifies as fair use simply because it is short, noncommercial, credited, or accompanied by a disclaimer. YouTube describes four U.S. fair-use factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount used, and the effect on the work’s market. Courts assess fair use case by case; adding material or saying “no infringement intended” does not settle the question. YouTube explains fair use and its limits.

That U.S. guidance does not guarantee that an upload will avoid a Content ID claim or takedown. YouTube says automated Content ID systems cannot decide fair use; only courts can decide the legal question based on the facts. Copyright exceptions differ by country. Singapore’s Intellectual Property Office, for example, describes its own case-specific assessment of reproducing and communicating protected material. If you publish outside the United States, check the law where you publish as well as the platform’s current rules. See the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore’s copyright guidance.
Choose music with a license that covers the upload
Use music you created, music for which you have written permission, or a license that expressly covers the video, destination platform, format, and monetization you plan. YouTube’s Audio Library is one option; check its current terms for the particular track. A third-party service’s “royalty-free” label alone does not establish that YouTube use or monetization is allowed. Check YouTube Audio Library guidance.

There is no automatic safe number of seconds for a song. The U.S. Copyright Office says, “There’s no hard and fast minimum amount of music you can use without getting permission when you need it.” If permission is required, being unable to reach a rights holder does not substitute for getting permission. Read the U.S. Copyright Office’s guidance for musicians.
Edit for clarity and dignity
- Open simply. Use a brief title card with the wrestler’s name and the tribute’s focus. Avoid wording or graphics that suggest an official release if it is not one.
- Arrange the material with purpose. Put moments in chronological order or group them by a clear theme, such as a team, era, or signature performance.
- Caption accurately. Check match names, dates, event names, and context. Do not use captions to turn rumor or allegation into apparent fact.
- Give moments room. Use restrained transitions and audio levels. Avoid rapid-fire cuts, jokes, or dramatic effects that make death or family grief feel sensational.
- Close with a concise dedication. Keep it personal and clear without implying family or promotion approval.
Review the video before publishing
- Confirm names, dates, captions, and the context of each moment.
- Check that every asset has an appropriate permission or license for the planned use, or that you have carefully assessed the legal basis for using it.
- Listen for music or other audio that may not be covered by your rights.
- Make sure the title, description, and visuals do not imply official endorsement.
- Check privacy settings and the platform’s current copyright and music rules. An unlisted YouTube link is still a platform upload and does not grant rights.
For platform context, YouTube says: “Including the phrase ‘no infringement intended’ won’t automatically protect you from a claim of copyright infringement.” See YouTube’s fair-use guidance.
