Choose a reusable coffee cup with a smooth, easy-to-clean surface, food-contact suitability for its intended use, and care instructions you can follow. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) identifies porcelain, stainless steel, glass, and rigid, temperature-stable plastics as suitable material categories when applicable requirements are met. Avoid melamine-formaldehyde resin cups for hot coffee, including some products marketed as bamboo cups.
Which reusable cup materials are suitable?
BfR’s guidance is conditional: the cup must meet applicable requirements for its intended or reasonably foreseeable use, and its surface should be smooth and easy to clean. A material name alone does not certify an individual product. The practical trade-offs below are buying considerations, not comparative test results.

Why “bamboo” on the label needs a closer look
“Bamboo” may describe a filler rather than the cup’s main material. BfR reports that some cups marketed as made from natural materials were plastics, such as melamine-formaldehyde resin, filled with bamboo fibres. It says bamboo fibres and rice husks are not authorised as fillers in plastic food-contact items. Check the stated composition rather than assuming a natural-sounding label means the cup is made entirely of bamboo or is suitable for hot drinks. BfR guidance
How to compare cups for your routine
Start with the drink and setting, then check whether the construction can be cleaned reliably. Compare the following before buying:

- Temperature: Is the cup intended for the beverage temperature you use? Read the product’s stated heat limits.
- Cleanability: Can you reach and clean the inside, rim, lid, seals, and seams where residue can collect?
- Care limits: Does the manufacturer allow dishwasher or microwave use? Do not assume either is suitable.
- Portability: Consider weight, breakage tolerance, grip, capacity, and insulation needs.
- Condition over time: The surface should remain smooth and free of hairline cracks or visible wear.
- Whole-product materials: Check the cup, lid, and seals rather than relying on a single material claim about the body.
How to clean and maintain a reusable cup
BfR recommends regular cleaning with hot water and washing-up liquid, or a dishwasher only when the manufacturer says the cup is dishwasher-suitable. Dry it thoroughly or leave it to dry completely. Inspect the inside, rim, lid, and residue-trapping seams as part of routine care. Stop using a cup when its surface is no longer smooth or has hairline cracks or visible wear, as BfR advises. Follow the specific manufacturer’s care instructions, since suitability for dishwashers or microwaves varies by product.

In the EU, the general framework expects food-contact materials to be sufficiently inert so they do not adversely affect health or food quality. Businesses placing them on the market are responsible for safety testing, while Member State authorities carry out official controls. European Commission: food-contact materials

The European Commission announced a ban on BPA in food-contact materials on 19 December 2024, describing an 18-month phase-out for most products with limited exceptions. That announcement concerns a particular EU regulatory transition and product scope; it does not establish requirements in other jurisdictions or, by itself, determine the status of a particular cup.
