Yes—families in the U.S. may have other ways to get children’s books, but availability depends on a child’s age, location, and the organizations serving their community. Start by checking whether Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library serves your address, then look at local book-finding tools, eligible cultural programs, pediatric clinics, schools, and public libraries.
Check whether the Imagination Library serves your address
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is still the first program to check if you want books mailed to a young child. Its U.S. program page says registered children from birth through age five receive one age-appropriate book by mail each month at no cost to their family. The program describes the service this way: “Each month, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library mails a high-quality, age-appropriate book to all registered children, addressed to them, at no cost to the child’s family.” Check availability by state and follow the local partner’s enrollment information. Find local book-distribution programs
A ZIP-code search can be a useful way to uncover programs beyond the best-known national services. First Things First recommends using its Find Programs tool to look for book-distribution options, then contacting the listed provider directly. Treat the tool as a directory, not a guarantee: enrollment, age limits, delivery method, and current availability are set by each program. (First Things First Find Programs)
- Enter your ZIP code in the Find Programs tool.
- Review any book-distribution programs listed for your area.
- Contact each provider to confirm who can enroll, whether books are mailed or distributed another way, and whether applications are currently open.
Compare other book and reading options
These programs do not all work like a monthly home subscription. Some mail books to eligible families; others provide books through a clinic, school, community organization, or library. Ask about local terms before assuming a service is free or available to your household.

Ask about programs delivered through a clinic, school, or library
Institution-based programs can be easy to miss if you search only for mail subscriptions. At a participating pediatric practice, Reach Out and Read connects books and reading guidance with routine care. First Book provides books and educational resources to schools and programs serving children in need. Your local public library is another place to ask. A children’s librarian can tell you whether the library offers borrowing, storytimes, take-home books, or outreach. These services and any associated terms are local, so confirm what is currently available rather than assuming a particular program exists everywhere.

Consider paid books only as a supplement
If free options do not cover your needs, age-appropriate board books for babies and toddlers or picture books for preschool read-alouds can supplement a child’s reading.
