The exact option may be called contacts, starred contacts, or favorites—or may differ by phone—so check the labels on your device.
Set Do Not Disturb to allow calls from chosen contacts
- Open Settings.
- Tap Modes, then Do Not Disturb.
- Open Notification filters and select People.
- Set calls to be allowed from the contacts you want to hear from. Depending on your phone, the choice may refer to contacts, starred contacts, or favorites.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb with Turn on now, or turn it on using the Do Not Disturb tile in Quick Settings.
Google’s current instructions describe the People filter, but do not promise a single “Favorites” or “Starred contacts” label for every Android device. Google notes: “Settings can vary by phone. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.” Google’s Do Not Disturb instructions provide the general route.
Choose what else Do Not Disturb silences
Calls are only one part of the filters. In Notification filters, review the options for apps and alarms or other interruptions, and choose what you want Do Not Disturb to allow. This lets you silence app notifications while leaving permitted calls audible, and decide separately how alarms and other interruptions behave.
Optional: allow repeat callers
If you enable Allow repeat callers, Google says a second call from the same person can get through when they call twice within 15 minutes. This setting is separate from allowing selected contacts: it is for repeat calls, not a replacement for configuring the People filter. Google’s Modes and Do Not Disturb guidance includes this behavior.

When the settings don’t match your phone
Google says some of its current steps work only on Android 14 and later, and menus vary by device manufacturer. If your phone does not show Modes, Notification filters, or the same People options, use your manufacturer’s support instructions rather than assuming the labels or route are universal. Android 8.1 and earlier have older Do Not Disturb choices—Total silence, Alarms only, and Priority notifications only—which are not the current general route.
If an allowed call appears but does not ring
Check the Do Not Disturb People filter, then check the phone’s sound controls. Android separates call, ring, notification, media, and alarm volume, and also provides mute and vibrate settings. Make sure ring volume and the phone’s mute or vibrate state match what you expect. These checks may help identify a setting to review, but they do not diagnose every device-specific problem; consult your phone maker if the issue continues. A June 19, 2025 Android Community post describes one Fairphone user reporting that starred callers did not ring despite being enabled. It is a device-specific report, not evidence that the feature generally fails: the user’s report and response refer the issue to manufacturer support.
