Start by lowering screen brightness, shortening the screen timeout, and checking which apps use the most battery. These changes reduce display use and unnecessary background activity. Next, try your device’s built-in power-saving mode; lower or adaptive refresh rate and dark theme can help on supported devices, but their effects vary. The exact names and results depend on your operating system, version, and device.
Which settings should you change first?
- Lower screen brightness. The display is a direct source of power use. Choose a comfortable lower level, or use automatic brightness if it works well for you.
- Shorten the screen timeout. Set the screen to turn off sooner when you are not using the device. On a Windows laptop, also shorten the screen-off and sleep times while on battery.
- Check battery use by app. Review app-level battery usage before restricting anything. If an app you rarely use is consuming unusually much power, limit its background activity or battery use where your device allows it.
- Enable the built-in power-saving mode when needed. Battery Saver, Energy Saver, or Low Power Mode can reduce background work and other power-intensive activity. Use it when longer runtime matters more than immediate syncing, notifications, or full performance.
- Adjust refresh rate if your device supports it. A lower or dynamic refresh rate can reduce display activity, but motion may look less smooth.
- Treat dark theme as a secondary option. It may reduce display power use on some devices, but it is not a guaranteed large saving.
No universal number of extra hours applies to these settings: results depend on the device, battery condition, signal, apps, and how you use the screen.
Windows laptops: reduce display and background activity
Recent Windows 11 guidance places power controls at Settings > System > Power & battery. Depending on the device, you may find power mode, Energy Saver, and app battery usage there. Display and refresh-rate controls are under Settings > System > Display. Available options vary by Windows version and hardware, so use the controls actually shown on your PC.
- Lower brightness and set a shorter screen-off time when running on battery.
- Review Battery usage per app, then address unusually heavy background use.
- Try Best Power Efficiency or Energy Saver where available to reduce background work.
- Battery Saver can turn off or limit functions such as automatic mail and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and activity from apps you are not using.
- If supported, Dynamic Refresh Rate can lower the refresh rate during static tasks.
Microsoft describes Battery Saver as “the easiest way to extend battery life” in its Windows battery-saving guidance. The mode saves power by limiting activity, so some updates or background functions may not happen as promptly.

iPhone and iPad: manage background refresh and Low Power Mode
On iPhone and iPad, reduce screen brightness and use Wi-Fi when practical. To control background updating, open Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Depending on the device and settings, options include Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi & Cellular Data, or Off.
For a temporary runtime extension, turn on Low Power Mode. It is a bundle of changes rather than a switch that preserves every feature: it reduces or disables functions such as Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. Apple says Low Power Mode limits refresh rate to up to 60 Hz on ProMotion models. Some background conveniences or updates may be delayed or unavailable while it is on. Android phones: use app optimization and Battery Saver
Android menu names and locations differ by version and manufacturer, so consult your phone maker’s instructions for the exact path. Google’s general recommendations include reducing brightness, setting the screen to turn off sooner, keeping Adaptive Battery on, and restricting apps that use a lot of battery.
- Review app battery use first. Restrict background use for high-drain apps when their activity is not important to you.
- Keep Adaptive Battery enabled. On supported devices, it reduces activity from less-used apps.
- Use Battery Saver when runtime is the priority. It may limit or turn off background activity and can delay visual effects, features, network connections, or apps.
- Try Dark theme if you prefer it. Availability and battery impact depend on the device and display.

How to choose the right combination
- For an everyday improvement: lower brightness, shorten screen timeout, and identify any unusually heavy apps.
- When you need the battery to last longer right now: enable your platform’s power-saving mode and accept that some background functions may be delayed.
- If you value smooth motion: leave refresh rate unchanged unless you need the extra runtime and your device offers a suitable lower or dynamic setting.
- If notifications matter: avoid broadly restricting apps you rely on; target only nonessential or unusually heavy background use.
These settings reduce power demand; they do not restore lost battery capacity. If runtime remains poor after changing usage settings, battery health may be a separate issue.
