Before sending money to a crypto presale, verify the project through independent sources, read exactly what your wallet is being asked to approve, and be ready to walk away. Guaranteed returns, urgent pressure, and unsolicited pitches are warning signs—not proof by themselves, but reasons to stop and investigate.

What makes a crypto presale suspicious?

Fraudsters may promise fast, easy money or guaranteed returns, make large claims without explaining how the investment works or where the funds will go, or impersonate a company that supposedly issued a token. A polished website, active group chat, celebrity endorsement, or testimonial does not establish that an offering is genuine.

Unsolicited messages, social media posts, online dating contacts, calls, and messages can all be used to promote scams. Treat pressure to act quickly as a reason to pause rather than a reason to send funds. The FTC describes these warning patterns in its consumer advice on cryptocurrency and scams.

How to check a presale before sending funds

  1. Verify the issuer independently. Search the project or person and token name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” Look for established media coverage if the promoter claims a known company issued the token. Do not rely solely on links, contact details, or evidence provided by the promoter.
  2. Compare the claim with primary sources. If a company or public figure is said to back or issue the token, find that organization’s official site or verified communication independently. A claim appearing only on the presale site or in its chat is not independent confirmation.
  3. Ask how the project works and where funds go. If the explanation is vague, the risks are obscured, or answers do not address how the token and proceeds are used, do not treat confidence or elaborate marketing as a substitute for clarity.
  4. Decide without urgency. If the decision depends on acting immediately, decline or investigate further. There is no obligation to participate just because a presale has a deadline.

These checks can surface warning signs; passing them does not prove a presale is safe. The FTC reported that consumers lost more than $1 billion to cryptocurrency fraud from January 2021 through March 2022, including $575 million in reported losses tied to bogus cryptocurrency investment opportunities. Those figures describe reported losses in that historical period, not presales alone and not a current annual estimate. See the FTC’s 2022 report.

Decide whether to decline, investigate, or proceed

Choice When it fits What to do
Decline The pitch uses guaranteed returns, pressure, impersonation, or explanations you cannot verify. Do not connect your wallet or send funds. Stop responding to the promoter.
Investigate further Important claims remain unclear or independent confirmation is missing. Verify the issuer through independent channels and continue only if you can understand the project, risks, and transaction details.
Proceed only with money you can afford to lose You have independently checked the claims and understand that a loss may be permanent. Use no money needed for essentials or obligations, and inspect every wallet prompt before signing.

No checklist can guarantee a presale is legitimate or profitable. If you cannot explain what you are buying, how the transaction works, and what you could lose, do not proceed.

Protect your wallet and check every transaction

Cryptocurrency is held through digital wallets and private keys. If an exchange fails, funds go to the wrong person, a password is lost, or a wallet is stolen or compromised, there may be no one able to recover the funds. The FTC also warns that crypto payments typically are not reversible. Read its consumer guidance before treating a transfer like a card payment that can be disputed.

  • Keep recovery words private. Never give anyone your recovery phrase or private keys, including someone claiming to be support. A legitimate presale should not need your recovery words.
  • Check links and addresses independently. Do not assume a link or wallet address is genuine because it arrived in a message, appears in a group, or resembles a familiar one.
  • Read the signing prompt. Check the destination, network, asset, amount, and any permissions being requested. Do not sign if the details are unclear, unexpected, or broader than you intended.
  • Confirm network and token compatibility. Make sure the wallet and network support the asset and transaction you intend to use; sending to an incompatible destination can put funds at risk.

A hardware wallet is a physical device for storing private keys; it does not verify that a presale is genuine or prevent you from approving a dangerous transaction. The SEC describes wallets as software or hardware used to store private keys, and Trezor identifies its Safe 3 as a hardware wallet. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications and availability before choosing a device. Security still depends on keeping recovery information private and understanding what you sign.

What to do if you suspect you were scammed

  1. Stop sending funds and stop signing requests. Do not pay an additional “recovery,” tax, or release fee to someone promising to get the money back.
  2. Preserve records. Save transaction IDs, wallet addresses, messages, emails, site URLs, receipts, and dates. Keep copies before blocking the promoter or removing an app or conversation.
  3. Contact the exchange involved. Report the transaction to the exchange or service used to send the funds and provide the records you preserved.
  4. Report the suspected fraud. The FTC identifies the FTC, CFTC, SEC, Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the exchange used as reporting options. Choose the agency or agencies that fit the situation and submit accurate details.

Reporting can help document suspected fraud, but it does not guarantee reimbursement. A sender typically cannot reverse a blockchain transfer, and anyone claiming certain recovery should be treated cautiously. The FTC’s consumer guidance lists these reporting channels and explains the limits of crypto payments.

What U.S. SEC guidance does—and does not—say about presales

On March 17, 2026, the SEC described a taxonomy that includes digital commodities, collectibles, tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. Its interpretation addresses how a crypto asset that is not itself a security may become subject to, or cease to be subject to, an investment contract. It does not establish one blanket legal treatment for all tokens or presales. See the SEC’s March 17, 2026 statement.

On April 13, 2026, SEC Trading and Markets staff issued a statement about broker-dealer registration requirements for certain interfaces preparing transactions in crypto asset securities using self-custodial wallets. The statement is limited to its described transactions, parameters, and disclosures; it is not a general certification of wallets, tokens, interfaces, or presales. See the staff statement.
