A blank Windows Security screen does not, by itself, prove that antivirus protection is off. First check which security provider Windows reports and confirm protection status with that provider; then repair the app and check for updates. Work through the steps below in order, starting with the least disruptive options.
1. Restart Windows and repair the Windows Security app
- Restart your PC and open Windows Security again.
- In Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Windows Security, open its menu, and select Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair, then reopen the app to check whether its pages load.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not fix the display, return to the same page and select Reset if that option is available.
Windows does not offer app repair options for every app. Microsoft recommends trying Repair before Reset; Reset is the more disruptive choice. See Microsoft’s instructions for repairing apps and programs.
2. Check which security provider Windows reports
If Windows Security opens far enough to show its settings, go to Settings > Manage providers. Review the providers listed for antivirus, firewall, and web protection. Then open Settings > About to see the app version and policy information.
A provider listed there can help explain which product is responsible for a protection feature, but the blank display itself does not establish whether protection is active. If the device is managed by your employer or school, policy may limit what you can view or change; ask its administrator to verify the device’s status.

3. Verify protection without relying on the blank screen
The Virus & threat protection page normally shows current threat information, scan options, antivirus settings, and security intelligence update controls. If it loads, review the status and available controls there rather than inferring protection from the app’s visual condition.
If Windows Security remains unusable, confirm the active provider and protection status directly with that security provider or your device administrator. Do not disable antivirus, firewall, or security services as a troubleshooting shortcut.

4. Install Windows and Windows Security updates
Use Windows Update to check for available Windows updates, install them, and restart. Microsoft also documents an update for the Windows Security app and its underlying service on Windows 11, build 22000 or later. That package guidance is specific to those Windows 11 versions and should not be treated as an update for every Windows release.

Use the version-specific instructions on Microsoft’s Windows Security app and service update page before attempting any package-related update.
5. Use the Windows 10 security troubleshooter only on Windows 10
Microsoft’s Automatically fix Windows security issues page describes a troubleshooter for Windows 10 that checks and enables features including antivirus protection status and updates. It is not a universal Windows 11 repair.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.

If the display problem persists alongside broader Windows problems, consider recovery only after trying the app-level steps. Microsoft advises starting with the least disruptive recovery choice. Back up important files before recovery: some options can result in data loss, and recovery or installation media may be needed for certain workflows.

Options such as Reset this PC or reinstalling Windows are escalation steps, not routine fixes for a blank Windows Security page. Follow Microsoft’s recovery options guidance and installation media instructions if you reach that point. A USB drive is not a direct remedy for this app display issue.
