To create a WordPress featured image with Nano Banana 2, generate and download an image in Gemini Apps, upload it to your WordPress site, assign it as the post’s Featured Image, then preview how your theme crops it. Choose the composition for the place it will appear; neither a prompt nor a universal pixel size can guarantee the same crop across WordPress themes.
Choose the image’s destination before you generate it
First identify where the image will appear: for example, in a post header, an archive card, or a Featured Image block. If possible, inspect that area on your site and note its shape and how much of the image remains visible. WordPress themes can support featured images, register their own image sizes, and control cropping, so the target site—not a general size recommendation—is the best guide. WordPress explains featured-image support and theme-defined sizes.
Leave some visual breathing room around the main subject. A face, product, or other key detail close to an edge is more likely to be cut off when a theme displays the image in a different shape.
Generate and download an image in Gemini Apps
- Open Gemini Apps and start an image-generation request.
- Describe the article subject, the main visual, the background, and the style. Include a landscape aspect ratio that suits the planned placement, if appropriate.
- Review the result. If needed, ask Gemini to refine the composition, then download an image you want to use.
Google recommends considering composition, visual style, image quality, and aspect ratio when creating images in Gemini Apps. Access and download options may vary by account, location, and plan.

Create a [style] featured image for an article about [topic]. Show [main subject] against [background]. The ratio and safe-space wording guide the composition; they do not guarantee that Gemini or your WordPress theme will preserve that framing. If a result is cropped badly, try regenerating it with more room around the subject.
Upload the image and assign it to the post
- In WordPress, upload the downloaded file to the Media Library. WordPress also documents adding images through the editor; the controls available depend on your setup. See WordPress’s guide to using images.
- Open the post in the editor and select the image in the Featured Image control. WordPress themes must support featured images for this option to be available. See the WordPress featured-image documentation.
- Save or update the post, then preview the image in the places your site displays it.
Check the crop in your theme
Preview the post header and any archive or card view where the image appears. WordPress can create resized image variants, and themes may use different registered sizes or crop behavior in different contexts. The Featured Image block can also have an aspect ratio set by theme settings.

If the preview cuts off an important detail, adjust the source composition or the relevant block or theme settings, then preview again. A 16:9 image may be a useful starting point for a landscape placement, but it is not a WordPress requirement.
Why there is no single correct WordPress image size
WordPress provides configurable image sizes, including thumbnail, medium, medium-large, and large; themes can also register custom featured-image sizes. Administrators can change thumbnail, medium, and large dimensions in Settings > Media, and the thumbnail may be configured to crop square. The actual size and crop used on a site depend on its settings, theme, template, and placement.

For that reason, avoid treating any one pixel measurement as correct for every featured image. Inspect the rendered area, generate a composition with room for cropping, and use the site preview to judge the result.

For a one-off post image, Gemini Apps provides a user-facing route to generate, review, and download an image; you do not need to use an API just to assign a featured image. For a programmatic workflow, Google’s Gemini API image-generation documentation describes model configuration and image output, including aspect-ratio and output-size options such as 16:9. Check the current API documentation for supported parameters before building an automated pipeline.

Google identifies Nano Banana 2 as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Its API documentation calls it the recommended all-around image-generation model for a balance of performance, intelligence, cost, and latency; that is Google’s characterization, not an independent comparison of featured-image results.
Check rights before publishing
Google’s Gemini Apps guidance says its Terms of Service and Prohibited Use Policy apply and advises care with other people’s copyright and privacy rights. Check that you have permission to use any uploaded reference images and that the final image is appropriate for your intended publication; generated output is not automatically cleared for every use.
