Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition inspired by Netflix’s scripted series: contestants play games and face eliminations for a single prize, not the lethal consequences shown in the drama. Netflix describes the competition as having 456 contestants and a $4.56 million prize. The rules and lineup vary by season; the eight-game overview below covers Season 2.
How does Squid Game: The Challenge work?
Contestants compete in a sequence of games and eliminations, with one player ultimately winning the prize. Netflix’s Season 2 guide describes eight games, ranging from team races and social games to the final test of movement control. The reality show borrows the visual language and some game ideas from the scripted series, but its outcomes are competition eliminations.
Season 2 was filmed in the United Kingdom and released as a three-week event beginning November 4, 2025, with new episodes on Tuesdays and a November 18 finale. Netflix Tudum reported a 10-episode season and one winner from 456 entrants. These are Season 2 details, not a promise about future seasons.
What are the Season 2 games and rules?
1. The Count
Two players volunteer to stand on giant X and O markings; the remaining 454 contestants split between their sides. Each volunteer presses a button when they believe 456 seconds have passed. The side whose volunteer is closer to the correct elapsed time survives, and the other side is eliminated.

2. Six-Legged Pentathlon
Ten players split into two teams of five, tie their legs together, and race head-to-head through five mini-games in sequence. The winning team advances; the losing team is eliminated. This reality-show version has no time limit. Executive producer Stephen Yemoh said the change was intended to bring “that sense of competition quite early.”
- Ball-in-a-Cup: Catch a ball attached to a string inside a cup.
- Flying Stone: Throw a stone from behind a line to knock over another stone. After a miss, the whole team walks to retrieve the thrown stone and returns to the line.
- Gong-gi: Toss five dice and catch them through increasingly difficult stages.
- House of Cards: Build a balanced structure of seven cards.
- Jegi: Kick a shuttlecock-like object three times in a row without dropping it.
3. Catch
Players choose among four color groups and take positions on marked dots in lines. A thrower aims at the person at the front of a line. If that player catches the ball, the thrower passes it to them and the catcher becomes the next thrower. If the ball is dropped, both thrower and catcher are eliminated. Netflix’s guide says only 16 balls are used, so some contestants may not get a turn. The choice of color group and line position therefore matters as well as catching ability. Executive producer Nicola Brown described its premise simply: “can you catch the ball, can you throw a ball?”

4. Mingle
Players stand on a rotating carousel surrounded by doors. When it stops, a number is called, and players must form groups of exactly that size and enter a room together. Anyone left out, or in a group of the wrong size, is eliminated. The game rewards quick decisions and coordination under pressure. Executive games producer Anna Kidd said production had “90 cameras ready to film whatever happened, whenever it happened, at all times.”
5. Marbles
Players pair up, receive bags of marbles, and get 30 minutes to agree on a game using them. The pair determines how the winner is decided through the game they choose. The loser gives up their marbles and is eliminated.

6. Slides and Ladders
Pairs move across a large board-game-like set toward a final square. At a slide, players choose between two options: the wrong choice eliminates them, while the other sends them lower on the board. Landing on a question mark means drawing a card and following its instruction.
The apparent drop from the set is an illusion; a player quoted by Netflix Tudum said the slide curves sharply off the back. The production team reported that the 35-foot set went through more than 200 testing rounds.

7. Circle of Trust
Players sit blindfolded at desks arranged in a circle. A selected player places a gift box on another contestant’s desk. The recipient guesses who left it. If the guess is right, the giver is eliminated; if it is wrong, the recipient is eliminated.
8. Red Light, Green Light
Season 2 uses this game for its final four rather than opening with all 456 contestants. Players must remain still when the signal calls for it and move when permitted. Netflix reports that finalists wore body-motion tracking sensors and that production reviewed video frame by frame to judge movement.

- Gonggi Stone catching game (Korean Knucklebones) :Start the game by throwing five gong-gis onto the floor. Pick one gong-gi and throw it into the air. While this gong-gi is in the air, grab one that’s on the floor before catching the one in the air. Repeat this to clear the floor.
- Jebi Kicks (Korean Hacky Sack) : Continuously kick ‘Jebi’ in the air without dropping. Whoever manages the most number of kicks wins.

- Biseokchigi : Knock down the opponents’ Biseok(rocks) in 18 steps. Each step consists of stably resting the biseok on a body part and moving to opponent’s biseok to knock them down.
- DDAKJI : It's involves two playing tiles of different colors. The point of the game is to flip over the other player's tile, by hitting it with your tile from above. As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.
How does Season 2 differ from the scripted Squid Game?
The reality competition adapts familiar game concepts but uses its own format and rules. For example, the Six-Legged Pentathlon has teams of five tied together completing five mini-games with no time limit; Netflix says that version differs from the one described in the scripted series. Season 2 also places Red Light, Green Light at the final four rather than using it as the opening game for the full field. Do not assume a game’s rules or order remain the same from season to season.
Are players in real danger?
The show is an elimination contest, not the lethal contest depicted in the drama. Executive producer Tim Harcourt told Netflix Tudum, “People’s safety in the show is of paramount importance to us. Everything is considered — both physical safety and mental health.” The physical challenges and high-pressure social decisions remain part of the competition, but the stated production priority is contestant safety.
