Powered paragliding—also called paramotoring—is flight beneath a flexible paraglider wing using a backpack-style motor and propeller for thrust. In the United States, powered paragliders generally operate under the ultralight rules in FAA Part 103, but airspace and operating limits still apply. Plan on learning from a qualified instructor: USPPA estimates training at $1,500–$3,500, in addition to the cost of equipment.

What is a paramotor, and how does powered paragliding work?

A powered paraglider combines a flexible, inflatable canopy with a motor unit carried on a frame. Lines connect the wing to a harness, which supports the pilot. The motor and propeller provide thrust to help the pilot climb or maintain level flight; the wing provides lift. The FAA’s powered-paragliding webinar listing identifies the main equipment components as a canopy, engine, cage, and harness: FAA Safety Team webinar listing.

Before takeoff, the pilot lays out and inflates the canopy and handles it on the ground to check that it is properly positioned. The pilot can launch on foot or use a wheeled unit. In flight, the pilot manages the wing and motor while choosing a safe landing area. The system has no rigid airframe: if the motor stops, the wing remains aloft and glides, but the pilot must land without power. That is why training includes power-off landings and why pilots need to remain within gliding range of a suitable landing option.

How to get started: choose training before buying gear

The United States Powered Paragliding Association (USPPA) recommends learning with a qualified instructor or school and asking to see a written syllabus. Compare schools on what they teach, who teaches it, what equipment they provide, how they handle weather delays, and what former students say. USPPA advises asking about simulators, tandem flights, or towing as possible instructional tools.

What a sound syllabus covers

  • Basic meteorology and weather forecasting, including wind and turbulence.
  • Airspace, FAA rules, and operating limitations.
  • Aerodynamics and how the wing behaves.
  • Ground handling, often called kiting, and launch preparation.
  • Basic motor maintenance.

Ask whether the school teaches on a beginner-suitable wing and checks that your weight falls within the manufacturer’s stated range. Ask which gear is included in the quoted price and what happens when weather prevents flying. Be cautious of claims that only one brand or equipment option is appropriate; the reviewed guidance does not establish a best brand or model.

How long does it take to learn?

USPPA reports that industry experts recommend five to eight full training days. On a calendar, weather and weekend-only availability can stretch that to roughly two or three months. A concentrated full-time course may lead to solo flights and a PPG1 rating in a few days, depending on conditions and the student. These are general estimates, not a promise: USPPA says developing mastery typically takes several months and dozens of flights.

USPPA ratings are voluntary benchmarks, not Part 103 pilot certificates. Its ratings guidance describes PPG1 as the student rating associated with initial training. PPG2 requires at least 25 flights, and reaching the associated skill level commonly takes 40 or more flights. See USPPA ratings.

How much does powered paragliding cost?

USPPA’s beginner FAQ, accessed in 2026, gives these budget estimates. They are association estimates, not guaranteed current quotes; the figures do not establish every item a particular pilot will need or include all recurring maintenance.

Item USPPA estimate What to know
Training $1,500–$3,500 Ask the school what instruction and equipment the quote includes.
New motor and wing $8,000–$12,000 Confirm the complete package and compatibility with your intended launch style and weight.
Used equipment $6,000–$9,000 Condition, service history, fit, and support matter; have an experienced instructor assess it.
Helmet with communications $100–$400 Choose a suitable fit and communications setup with instructor guidance.
Reserve parachute $500 or more USPPA recommends carrying a reserve; confirm compatibility and learn its use.
Gloves $15 USPPA estimate.
Radio $35 USPPA estimate.
Action camera $200 or more Optional item in USPPA’s budget list.

USPPA also notes recurring minor maintenance items such as belts and spark plugs. The estimates do not set a maintenance schedule or total lifetime cost. Compare complete packages rather than equipment prices alone, and get advice on condition and fit before buying used gear. See the USPPA beginner FAQ and USPPA safety guidance.

What safety practices matter most?

Paramotoring is aviation, not a motorized amusement ride. Training, weather judgment, airspace awareness, and a planned landing option are central to every flight. USPPA describes the risks as inherent to aviation; no source cited here establishes a reliable accident-rate percentage.

  • Item name: 1.5m RC powered paraglide kit for Outdoor Flying Gift
  • Suggested battery: 3s 1500-2200mah/4s 1300-1800mah (Not include)
  • Train thoroughly. Learn from a qualified school or instructor, including ground handling, weather, and power-off landings.
  • Respect the propeller. Treat starts as hazardous: brace for power, keep people clear of the propeller area, and use appropriate cage protection against propeller strikes.
  • Choose conservative conditions. Avoid strong winds, turbulence, thunderstorms, frontal conditions, and wind shadows behind obstructions.
  • Keep room to recover. Avoid steep maneuvering, especially near the ground, and avoid low flying where there is little room to recover or land. Stay well clear of wires.
  • Plan for an engine-out landing. Keep a safe power-off landing option within gliding range and avoid tight or obstructed launch sites.
  • Consider a reserve parachute. USPPA recommends one. It does not replace instruction, conservative decisions, or compatible equipment.

Do you need a license to fly in the United States?

USPPA says powered paragliders in the United States generally fall under Federal Aviation Regulations Part 103, which governs ultralight vehicles. Its explanation says Part 103 does not require a pilot license, medical certificate, vehicle registration, or formal training. That does not make flight unrestricted: pilots remain responsible for applicable operating rules, airspace, and safe operation. These statements are U.S.-specific; rules in other countries may differ.

The USPPA-hosted Part 103 reference lists powered-ultralight limits including empty weight below 254 pounds, fuel capacity no greater than five U.S. gallons, maximum speed of 55 knots, and power-off stall speed no greater than 24 knots. Verify current requirements in the controlling rule and check applicable airspace before flying. USPPA highlights daylight-operation limits, restrictions on flying over congested areas, and a prohibition on carrying passengers unless an applicable waiver or exemption permits it. See the USPPA Part 103 reference.

Can you carry a passenger?

Do not assume a newly trained pilot may take a passenger. USPPA says tandem flight in U.S. airspace is available under its FAA exemption for appropriately rated USPPA members, and its ratings page specifies a tandem rating. Eligibility depends on those conditions; check the current exemption and rating requirements before planning a tandem flight.
