To set a deposit limit, sign in to your bingo account and open Safer Gambling, Responsible Gambling or the account controls. Choose an amount and period you can afford, then check what the limit covers. For a pause, use the operator’s time-out option; to stop gambling with that business, request self-exclusion. In Great Britain, you can also use GAMSTOP to exclude yourself from participating licensed online gambling businesses.

The rules below apply to Great Britain, not everywhere. If you are elsewhere, check your local gambling regulator and the operator’s terms.

How to set a deposit limit on a bingo account

  1. Find account controls. Sign in and look for Safer Gambling, Responsible Gambling or financial-limit settings. If you cannot find them, contact the operator’s customer service. Great Britain’s Gambling Commission says financial-limit facilities should be easy to reach from an operator’s homepage and deposit pages.
  2. Choose the right kind of limit. A deposit limit caps money paid into the account over a set duration. It is different from a loss limit or a net-deposit limit, so check the wording and what transactions count. From 30 June 2026, Great Britain-licensed online operators must offer a limit based only on gross deposits, and only that control may be called a “deposit limit.” Other types of limit may still be available under different names. The Commission explains the terminology change.
  3. Set an affordable amount and period. Choose a cap based on what you can afford to lose, not what you hope to win back. Great Britain’s rules require online operators to offer limit periods of 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month. Check whether the control applies to your whole account or only a specific product or channel. RTS 12 sets out the requirements.
  4. Check how multiple limits interact. If you set more than one period, the most restrictive applicable limit governs. The Commission’s example: a £10 daily limit and a £100 weekly limit allow no more than £10 in a day and £70 in a week.
  5. Read the confirmation and effective time. In Great Britain, a requested decrease should take effect immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. A requested increase requires a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours and your positive confirmation after that period. The operator should tell you when the change takes effect.

When the setting is unclear, ask the operator whether it limits gross deposits, losses or net deposits, which account activity it covers, and when a change becomes active. Great Britain’s Commission announced an earlier set of limit requirements for 31 October 2025, including prompts before a first deposit, easy review and change, account-level free-text limits, visible access routes and immediate action on decreases. See the Commission’s announcement for the rule context and dates.

Choose between a limit, a time-out and self-exclusion

Option What it does Scope and duration
Deposit limit Caps money deposited into an account over a defined period; it does not necessarily cap losses. Set through the operator. Great Britain’s required periods are 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month.
Time-out or break Pauses access or play for a period chosen from the operator’s available options. Operator-specific: check the length, what is blocked and what happens to the account before confirming.
Operator self-exclusion Formally excludes you from gambling with that operator; agreed exclusion requires account closure and return of remaining funds. Applies to that business. Ask the operator how to request it and what its process covers.
GAMSTOP Prevents new accounts with Great Britain-licensed online gambling businesses. Free registration for UK residents for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, according to GamCare.

A limit controls one aspect of spending; a time-out or exclusion addresses access. These controls are not interchangeable. The Commission’s self-exclusion guidance explains the operator process, while GamCare describes GAMSTOP and other self-exclusion options.

How to take a break from online bingo

  1. Open your operator’s safer-gambling or account-control area and select Time-out, Take a break or a similarly named option.
  2. Read the available duration and the effect on your account before you confirm. Operators do not all offer the same time-out period or interface.
  3. If you need a formal stop rather than a temporary pause, use the operator’s self-exclusion process instead. For coverage across participating Great Britain-licensed online businesses, register with GAMSTOP if eligible.

A time-out is an operator-specific break, not formal self-exclusion. Do not assume that a pause at one bingo site blocks other gambling sites, or that it has a particular duration; verify those details with the operator. The Commission distinguishes self-exclusion from other safer-gambling controls.

How to self-exclude from a bingo site

Contact the bingo operator or use its self-exclusion controls and request exclusion. A single-operator exclusion covers that business, so consider whether you also need to exclude yourself from other online operators, gambling venues or products.

Where to get help stopping online gambling

Account limits and exclusion tools can add safeguards, but they do not replace specialist help. If gambling is worrying you or feels difficult to control, GamCare offers free, confidential support through the National Gambling Helpline at 0808 8020 133 and live chat, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. GamCare’s safer-gambling page has details.

Bank gambling blocks and gambling-site blocking software can add friction alongside account controls. They are extra barriers, not substitutes for setting limits, exclusion or support where needed.
