What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a laptop CPU and GPU by matching them to the games, editing software, or development tools you actually use—not by comparing processor and graphics names alone. Start with your workload, target settings, portability needs, and budget; then compare complete laptops using tests that reflect that workload.
What the CPU and GPU each do
A CPU handles general computing and is especially important for work that depends on quick responses or strong performance from individual cores. A GPU is designed for parallel work, including game rendering and some video and AI tasks. Intel describes the CPU as suited to tasks where latency or per-core performance matters, while GPUs handle parallel operations such as graphics rendering (Intel’s CPU and GPU overview).
That division is a starting point, not a rule that one component matters more in every application. Games, editing programs, codecs, effects, and developer tools use hardware differently. Integrated graphics can be enough for light gaming, media playback, or some editing workflows; suitability depends on the specific software, media, resolution, and project complexity. Supported Intel processors can also use Quick Sync for video encoding and decoding (Intel’s gaming CPU guide).
Choose for the work you do
Gaming
For competitive games or high-refresh play, check CPU performance in the particular game: simulation and high frame rates can make the CPU a limiting factor. For visually demanding games, higher resolutions, ray tracing, and demanding quality settings tend to increase the graphics workload. Use frame-rate results from the exact game at the resolution and settings you intend to play, rather than assuming a component’s name predicts performance. Intel also recommends checking game-specific benchmarks and considering the GPU and RAM alongside the processor (Intel’s gaming CPU guide).

Compare results from the exact laptop configuration where possible. Laptop GPU power allocation, cooling, and system design affect performance; NVIDIA cautions that results vary by laptop model and advises checking the manufacturer’s specifications (NVIDIA’s laptop guidance).
Video editing
Before choosing hardware, identify your editing application, footage resolution, codecs, effects, and export format. Editing workloads can draw on the CPU, integrated media engines, and discrete GPU in different combinations. Check whether your editor supports the hardware acceleration you want, then look for benchmarks using a similar codec, project, effects, and export workflow.

Supported Intel processors may use Quick Sync for encode and decode tasks. AMD says its Radeon laptop graphics support hardware-accelerated AV1 encoding, with compatible media-player support required; AMD’s stated maximum of up to 16 GB GDDR6 applies to the Radeon RX laptop graphics family, not every laptop configuration (AMD’s Radeon RX laptop overview).
Development
Code editing, web development, and ordinary application work do not automatically call for a high-end discrete GPU. Larger builds, virtual machines, containers, simulations, game development, GPU computing, and local AI can change the balance: some need more CPU cores or memory, while others benefit from a capable GPU. Name the development tools and project types first, then check their requirements and relevant benchmarks. There is no single CPU/GPU configuration that fits every development workload.

Use GPU tiers as a starting point, not a guarantee
NVIDIA’s creative-workflow selector groups laptop GPUs into tiers and associates them with VRAM and video-resolution targets. These are NVIDIA’s vendor recommendations, not universal application requirements or guarantees that every laptop with the listed GPU will perform alike (NVIDIA Studio’s GPU selector).
| NVIDIA Studio tier | Laptop GPU listed | VRAM listed | Target video resolution listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | RTX 5050, 5060, or 5070 Laptop GPU | 8 GB | Up to 4K |
| Advanced | RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU | 12–16 GB | Up to 8K |
| Ultimate | RTX 5080 or 5090 Laptop GPU | 16 GB or more | Up to 12K |
Likewise, a component specification is not a laptop ranking. As one example, Intel lists its Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus at 24 cores and 24 threads—8 P-cores and 16 E-cores—with a maximum turbo frequency of up to 5.5 GHz on its 2026 laptop page (Intel’s Core Ultra gaming laptop page). Those specifications do not establish how a particular laptop performs under sustained workloads.

Vendor performance claims need their test conditions attached. Intel’s “up to 8% faster gaming” comparison for the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus is against the Core Ultra 9 285HX, based on a 32-game average at 1080p High in March 2026, with Intel Binary Optimization Tool enabled on select titles; Intel says results may vary. It is not a forecast for every game or laptop (Intel’s comparison details).

When you have candidate laptops, compare the system—not just its CPU and GPU labels. Use the same workload and settings for performance comparisons, and check the configuration details that can change real-world results.
- Workload results: game frame rates at your target resolution and settings, or editing and build results using comparable software, projects, codecs, and effects.
- Sustained performance: CPU and GPU performance over a longer workload, not only brief peak or burst behavior.
- Graphics configuration: the exact laptop GPU model and its power configuration; laptop graphics performance can vary by model.
- Memory: capacity and, where available, channel or configuration details. Consider whether the memory can be upgraded.
- Cooling and noise: chassis limits, thermal behavior, and fan noise under the work or play you expect to do.
- Display: resolution, refresh rate, and color coverage, matched to gaming or creative work.
- Portability and ownership: weight, battery life, charger, ports, and total price.
A laptop with a gaming-focused GPU may be a useful comparison tier for someone who also edits or develops, but an “RTX 5070 Laptop GPU” label is not enough to establish value or suitability. Check the individual laptop’s CPU, GPU power configuration, thermals, memory, display, price, and availability before choosing.
