Choose the Canon Rebel T3i if you want its flip-out screen for high, low, or self-framed shots, or expect to use its documented video controls. Choose the Rebel T2i if those features do not matter and you find a better-kept body or kit at a better price. Both are older 18-megapixel DSLRs that accept Canon EF and EF-S lenses, so condition and included accessories may matter more than the model difference.
The key difference: a flexible screen on the T3i
The T3i’s 3-inch articulated LCD can swing out and tilt, making it easier to compose when the camera is above your head or close to the ground. It can also help when you want to frame yourself in front of the camera. Canon lists the screen at approximately 1.04 million dots. The T2i has a fixed rear LCD.
This distinction affects framing convenience, not the optical-viewfinder shooting experience: if you usually look through the viewfinder and take eye-level photos, the T3i screen may not be worth paying extra for.
What the two cameras share
| Feature | Rebel T3i (EOS 600D) | Rebel T2i (EOS 550D) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensor class and resolution | 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS | 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS | The headline resolution is the same; megapixels alone do not establish a visible image-quality winner. |
| Lens compatibility | Canon EF mount; EF-S lenses supported | Canon EF mount; EF-S lenses supported | Either can suit someone who already owns compatible Canon lenses. |
| Memory cards | SD, SDHC, SDXC | SD, SDHC, SDXC | Both use the SD-card family. Check the relevant manual for card details and verify the slot works. |
| Rear display | 3-inch articulated LCD, approximately 1.04 million dots | Fixed rear LCD | The T3i offers more flexible framing angles. |
These specifications do not prove that the cameras produce identical files or perform identically in every shooting situation. Canon’s cited specifications and manuals are not comparative lab tests.

Video: useful controls, but an older generation
Both models record Full HD-era video, but neither should be treated as a modern hybrid camera. Canon documents video snapshots, manual recording-level control, wind filtering, and a stereo microphone input for the T3i. Consult the original manuals if a particular recording control matters to you: a feature listed for one model should not be assumed to work the same way on the other.
Do not buy either on the expectation of 4K recording, modern autofocus behavior, or contemporary connectivity features. For video work, compare the exact controls you need against the manuals and consider whether an older camera meets your workflow.

Names and model age
The Rebel T3i is also known as the EOS 600D; Canon’s Camera Museum dates its marketing to March 2011. The Rebel T2i is the EOS 550D. Canon’s discontinued-products index includes both models, so new-stock availability is uncertain and used listings are likely to be the more relevant buying route.

- Decide whether you will use the articulated screen. If you often shoot above or below eye level or need to frame yourself, prioritize the T3i. Otherwise, the T2i may cover your needs.
- Compare the complete kits, not just the body names. Check whether a listing includes a lens, battery, charger, and any other accessories you need; bundle contents vary by seller.
- Inspect the individual camera. Ask about condition and shutter count if provided, and whether the seller has tested the buttons, dials, screen, card slot, and other controls.
- Check the return policy and total cost. The official Canon sources establish neither current market prices nor a universal price premium for either model. Compare current listings rather than assuming the T3i is always worth more.
