These steps can narrow down common causes, but neither Steam nor Naughty Dog identifies one fix that resolves every problem. The PC release is part of UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection, so note which game is affected when reporting an issue.
1. Update the game and finish initial shader work
Steam’s pinned support guidance says to launch the game while online so the installation can receive updates. Use Steam’s normal update flow to check that the game is current; patch numbers below describe specific releases, not necessarily the latest version available.
If the game displays a shader-installation progress notice, wait for it to finish before playing. Steam also lists completion of the initial cache as a troubleshooting check. This is a useful first step if performance is poor, but it does not establish that shader work causes every stutter. Steam’s pinned support thread
Naughty Dog’s October 28, 2022 v1.1 release notes list “General stability & performance improvements.” The notes say the game version should read v1.1.20381 to confirm that specific patch. The notes do not promise that it fixes every later crash or performance problem.

2. Compare your PC with the published targets
Naughty Dog published the following specifications on September 28, 2022. They are the developer’s stated targets, not independent benchmark results or a guarantee of performance on every system. Use them to identify a possible hardware gap; if your PC falls short, lower graphics settings or resolution as a diagnostic experiment rather than expecting a particular frame rate.

Steam’s support guidance also cautions against exceeding available video memory (VRAM). If stuttering or instability coincides with high graphics settings, reduce settings that increase GPU memory use and test again. Steam recommends an SSD for best results; Naughty Dog specifies one for its recommended and higher tiers. If the game is installed on an HDD, an SSD may be worth considering if your PC supports it, but changing drives is not a guaranteed cure for crashes or controller trouble. 3. Verify the Steam installation
Use Steam’s integrity check if the game crashes, fails to launch, or behaves unexpectedly after an update. Steam notes that installed files can be corrupt or incompletely downloaded.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection and choose Properties.
- Select Local Files, then choose Verify the integrity of the game files.
- Let Steam complete the check, then launch the game and see whether the same issue occurs.
Verification is a repair check, not a guarantee that every crash or performance problem will be fixed. Steam’s support thread

4. Check controller and audio-device conflicts
Some controllers can also be recognized by Windows as audio devices. If connecting or using a controller coincides with missing, muffled, unusually quiet, or distorted sound, first confirm that Windows is sending audio to the device you intend to use.
- Open Windows Settings > System > Sound.
- Check the selected output device and choose your intended speakers or headphones.
- Close other audio programs that may be running at the same time, then test the game again.
Naughty Dog’s July 6, 2023 v1.4 notes add audio compatibility options at Options > Audio > Compatibility. For audio pops, clicks, distortion, or other described audio symptoms, the notes advise changing output mode or increasing latency. Restart the game for a latency change to take effect. These are documented options for audio problems, not a universal controller fix.

The cited support material does not establish a model-specific controller remedy. Avoid assuming you need a new controller based only on this symptom.

If the symptom is camera jitter while using a mouse and keyboard, check the game’s mouse settings rather than treating it as a general controller fault. In its July 6, 2023 v1.4 notes, Naughty Dog describes an “Improvement to address camera jitter experienced by some mouse and keyboard users” and adds Options > Controls > Mouse Smoothing. The notes document a targeted improvement and setting; they do not say all camera jitter or controller issues are resolved.

6. Report a crash or issue with useful details
If the checks do not resolve a reproducible problem, use the in-game crash reporting system when it appears. Steam’s pinned support post asks players to include details that let support distinguish a game-specific fault from a system or configuration problem.
- Identify whether the issue affects The Lost Legacy or the other game in UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection.
- Describe the issue type and exact steps that reproduce it, including the location or activity where it occurs.
- Include your CPU, GPU and graphics-driver version, RAM, operating system, and whether the game is on an HDD or SSD.
- List relevant game settings and the installed game version.
- Attach a DXDiag report and save data if requested by the support instructions.
