There is no reliable universal figure for how much a cruise-ship worker can save. Your result depends on the pay and deductions in your own contract, any applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA), payment and transfer fees, onboard spending, and bills that continue at home. Build the budget around money actually paid to you, then reconcile it against your statements each month.
Start with the contract, not a headline salary
Cruise-ship pay varies by job and employment terms; there is no single salary figure that can be used to predict everyone’s savings. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) says wage rates depend in part on whether a vessel is a national-flag ship or covered by an ITF agreement. Where an agreement applies, its wage scale matters, while your individual contract sets your terms. Keep a personal copy and verify which agreement covers your vessel. ITF wages guidance and ITF guidance on agreements explain the distinction.
One useful but narrow point of comparison is the ILO/JMC basic monthly wage for an able seafarer. ITF reports this schedule: USD 690 effective 1 January 2026, USD 704 effective 1 January 2027, and USD 715 effective 1 January 2028. These are able-seafarer minimum basic-wage figures, not estimates of take-home pay or salaries for every cruise role. ITF says the schedule was agreed at JMC meetings on 14–15 April 2025; the figures should not be treated as a universal cruise-worker wage. ITF’s wage page and ITF Global’s account of the agreement provide the details.
Calculate what can actually go into savings
Use a contract-level worksheet rather than a generic online savings estimate. Enter amounts and dates from your contract and records; mark uncertain income as variable instead of relying on it to meet fixed commitments.

- Record expected pay. List base pay, guaranteed overtime, variable overtime, and gratuities or commissions only where your contract confirms them. Include deductions and the scheduled pay dates.
- Plan transfers home. Write down each transfer’s amount, frequency, currency conversion, and transfer or intermediary fee. Check the amount received at home, not just what left your account.
- Track onboard spending. Record actual charges for items such as Wi-Fi, shops, drinks, cash withdrawals, and port-day spending where relevant. Payment methods and available purchases vary by employer and ship.
- Include home obligations. Add bills, debt payments, family support, and other costs that continue while you are at sea.
- Set a savings target after a full pay cycle. Use your actual deposit and spending records before setting an amount. Include a buffer for timing gaps and travel between home and the joining airport if those costs are yours.
- Reconcile monthly. Compare your plan with pay-card or bank statements, check that expected pay arrived, and adjust the next month’s budget.
Check how pay and onboard payments work
Do not assume that all cruise lines use the same pay schedule, card, fees, or onboard arrangements. For example, Princess Cruises says its shipboard staff are paid monthly in arrears using a Brightwell Crew Card; it also says personal-account transfers may incur a fee and crew-area ATMs may charge fees. Its page describes cashless onboard purchases for items including Wi-Fi, shops, and drinks. This is an employer-specific example, not an industry-wide rule. Check your employer’s current terms and the charges on your own statements. Princess Cruises’ shipboard jobs page describes its arrangement.
When comparing written offers or payment options, check base pay and currency; guaranteed versus variable overtime, tips, or commission; applicable flag-state rules, CBA, and contract; pay frequency; card, ATM, remittance, wire-transfer, and conversion fees; deductions and covered joining or travel costs; and contract length and leave period. Without current, comparable contract details, a general employer ranking would not establish which job leaves a worker with more savings.

Protect your pay and keep records
ITF says wages should be paid at least monthly under Maritime Labour Convention requirements. Arrange a regular payment mechanism where available, check that deposits arrive, and keep bank or pay-card statements alongside your contract. ITF warns against arrangements where all pay accumulates until the end of the contract and only small advances are paid in the meantime. ITF’s wages guidance explains these safeguards.
If salary is significantly delayed—ITF describes more than two weeks late—raise it with the captain. If wages remain unpaid, contact an ITF inspector or support channel promptly and gather your contract, ship details, and payment evidence. ITF reports around 1,500 unpaid-wage complaints to its inspectors each year (the page does not state a year for that figure) and says inspectors recovered USD 58.1 million in owed wages in 2024. Those figures are a reason to keep clear records, not a measure of any individual worker’s likelihood of nonpayment. ITF Global’s withholding-pay guidance provides further information.

Avoid paying upfront to get a job
ITF warns job seekers not to pay an agent money upfront to secure a shipboard job or required training. It says charging for this is illegal under the Maritime Labour Convention. Ask for written terms and verify a demand before sending money. ITF’s cruise-ship guidance covers this warning.

Your savings estimate is not a tax calculation. Tax treatment and remittance reporting depend on details such as residence, nationality, income, and the destination of transfers; the sources cited here do not establish a universal answer. No common onboard-spending budget or cross-company salary comparison establishes a typical savings amount either. Use your own contract and transaction records for the estimate, and seek advice relevant to your personal tax and residence circumstances where needed.
