Sometimes—but it depends on the exact phone. Minimalist phones range from closed devices that do not run third-party apps to models with limited app installation and built-in maps. The reviewed documentation does not confirm one device that supports WhatsApp, maps, and mobile payments together.
How the two example phones compare
| Capability | Punkt MP02 | Mudita Kompakt |
|---|---|---|
| Not supported, according to Punkt’s support documentation. | Not included initially. APK sideloading is possible, but compatibility is not guaranteed; Google Services are unsupported, according to Mudita’s app support information. | |
| Maps | Conventional navigation apps are not supported, according to Punkt. | Includes a Maps app with downloadable maps for offline searching and viewing, according to Mudita’s Maps guide. |
| Mobile payments | Not established in the reviewed sources. | NFC is listed in the technical specifications, but compatible wallet support and successful tap-to-pay are not established by the reviewed sources. |
| App installation | No app store or sideloading, according to Punkt. | Manual APK sideloading through Mudita Center is documented, with compatibility and support caveats, according to Mudita. |
WhatsApp depends on more than whether a phone accepts apps
The MP02 does not support WhatsApp. The Kompakt does not include WhatsApp initially, and its ability to install APK files does not establish that WhatsApp works reliably on it. Mudita warns that some apps may not work as intended and that apps relying on Google Services likely will not work correctly. Treat sideloading as an uncertain workaround, not confirmed WhatsApp support.
Maps can work without Google Maps
The Kompakt has a built-in Maps app. Download the map for the area you need while connected to the internet; afterward, the downloaded map can be searched or viewed offline. That documentation does not establish feature parity with Google Maps or confirm every navigation feature a traveler might expect. The MP02 does not support conventional navigation apps, according to Punkt.
NFC does not by itself enable mobile payments
Mudita lists NFC, GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo in the Kompakt specifications. These describe hardware capabilities, not a working payment setup. Google Wallet says tap-to-pay requires NFC to be enabled, a payment method in a supported country, and setup in the Google Wallet app. The reviewed sources do not confirm a compatible wallet app or successful contactless payments on the Kompakt. No payment capability is established here for the MP02.

What to verify before buying
Check the exact model and software version, since manufacturer support can change. Confirm WhatsApp support for that software rather than relying on the possibility of installing an APK. For maps, check offline coverage, map freshness, and which navigation functions are available. For payments, confirm that the wallet app works on the device and that your country, bank, and payment method are supported. Also verify carrier and network compatibility for the regional model you plan to buy.
The MP02 is a poor fit if you require WhatsApp and conventional navigation apps. The Kompakt documents built-in offline maps, but the reviewed sources do not verify WhatsApp or tap-to-pay on it. Neither example is confirmed to provide all three requested functions.
