Cisco said SnapAttack’s threat detection and engineering technology and expertise would help Splunk advance its detection-engineering roadmap. The acquisition announcement described priorities—not confirmation that every proposed capability is now available.
What Cisco acquired
Cisco described SnapAttack as a privately held company headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, with a threat detection and engineering (TD/E) platform. Its stated purpose was to help security teams research, write, validate, and deploy threat detections across their technology environments. Cisco said the platform’s technology, intellectual property, and expertise would accelerate Splunk’s threat-detection content and engineering roadmap. Cisco’s completion announcement confirms the acquisition closed January 31, 2025; its acquisitions list records December 16, 2024 as the announcement date.
Why the deal matters to Splunk security customers
Detection content is the logic that helps security tools identify suspicious activity. Splunk Enterprise Security already includes Enterprise Security Content Updates (ESCU), a collection of pre-packaged, regularly updated detection content, as described in Splunk’s December 16, 2024 announcement. Cisco presented SnapAttack as a way to strengthen the work around that content: finding relevant detections, creating and managing them, and checking whether they perform as intended.
The acquisition announcement also connected the platform to organizations moving from competing security products to Splunk Enterprise Security. Cisco said the technology could help customers adapt, deploy, and validate existing security content during that transition. This is an intended use described by Cisco, not a published migration schedule or guarantee of compatibility with every source product.

Capabilities Cisco identified as roadmap priorities
Cisco named several areas for roadmap acceleration. The announcement discusses planned or diligence areas, so it should not be read as a feature-by-feature release announcement.
- Detection-content discovery: finding relevant detection logic for an organization’s needs and environment.
- Authoring and lifecycle management: creating detections and managing them through their useful life.
- Continuous validation: checking detection content against changing threats and an organization’s technology estate.
- AI/ML uses: possible applications such as translating detections between formats or platforms.
The acquisition materials do not establish which SnapAttack capabilities have since shipped, how they are packaged, or where they are currently available. Confirm current feature status in product documentation or with Cisco/Splunk before relying on a specific capability.

What existing SnapAttack customers should do
Cisco’s completion announcement told current SnapAttack customers and partners to keep contacting their existing SnapAttack representative with questions about the product, support, and renewals. Cisco said it would communicate any process changes with ample time. The announcement did not provide detailed migration terms or a timetable for feature availability.
SnapAttack’s background
Booz Allen reported that SnapAttack was incubated by Booz Allen DarkLabs before its public launch in 2020, then spun out in 2021. Booz Allen remained an investor after the spinout. Its account describes the product as supporting collaboration around threat intelligence, attack emulation, and detection analytics: Booz Allen’s 2021 announcement.

- 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
- 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
What the acquisition announcement does—and does not—tell you
The deal is complete, and Cisco’s stated rationale is to bring SnapAttack’s technology and expertise to Splunk’s detection-engineering work. The announcement gives a useful picture of the intended direction, including detection discovery, lifecycle management, validation, and potential AI/ML applications. It does not by itself show which of those capabilities customers can use today, what they cost, or how a particular organization’s detections will migrate. Existing SnapAttack customers were directed to their representatives for product, support, and renewal questions.
