Choose an e-bike battery for the distance you must ride between charging opportunities—not the biggest mileage figure in an advert. Count the full trip, including the return journey and regular detours, then check that route with an estimate for the specific bike and drive system. Battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh) tells you how much energy is stored; it does not promise a particular distance.
Start with the distance you need to ride between charges
Write down the actual route and identify where you can charge. If you can reliably charge at work, the relevant distance may be one way. If you cannot, include the ride home, errands, and likely detours before comparing bikes. A commute that is manageable with a workplace charge may require a different battery choice when the bike must cover both legs on one charge.
There is no dependable universal mileage prediction from battery size alone. Trek gives a broad general estimate of 20–100 miles per charge, while warning that range depends on many conditions. Treat that span as evidence of variability, not as a forecast for your commute. Trek’s US e-bike FAQ recommends using a range estimator for a more useful estimate.
Use a route-specific estimate
For a bike you are considering
Check the manufacturer’s range tool for the exact model or drive system and enter your route and riding assumptions wherever the tool allows. Trek points prospective buyers of Bosch-equipped bikes to the Bosch range finder. Use the same route and assumptions when comparing candidates; a maximum-range claim is not a fair comparison if support modes or test conditions differ.

For a bike you already own
For current Trek e-bikes, Trek identifies Trek Central or Bosch eBike Flow as options that can estimate range based on route, assist level, and current battery percentage. Trek also recommends planning the route and taking a test ride to see how much battery it consumes. An estimate is a planning aid, not a guarantee.
Set realistic assumptions before comparing
Range changes with the bike, the route, and how you ride. Trek lists battery size, motor efficiency, assist level, carried weight, wind, weather, temperature, and terrain as relevant factors. Electra/Trek also calls out tire pressure and rider weight. Bosch’s indexed official guidance additionally highlights cadence, shifting, frequent starts and stops, tire pressure, weight, and cold temperatures; its help page redirected to maintenance when opened, so those points should be treated as Bosch-attributed guidance rather than independently inspected technical documentation.

- Assist: use the level you expect to ride in. Trek notes that lower assist uses less power than higher assist; an estimate based on Eco mode may not reflect a commute usually ridden in Turbo.
- Load: include your normal luggage, accessories, and any other carried weight. A commute with a loaded pannier setup is not the same as an unloaded estimate.
- Route: account for hills, stop-start intersections, and exposed sections where wind can matter. Elevation and frequent stops make a route different from a smooth, uninterrupted ride.
- Conditions and maintenance: consider seasonal cold and keep tires at an appropriate pressure for the bike and tire. Bosch says cold temporarily reduces range and recommends suitable cadence, shifting, and fewer frequent stops; these are operating suggestions, not a promised increase in miles.
Compare battery capacity and the whole bike
A watt-hour (Wh) is a measure of battery capacity. Electra/Trek explains that Wh is calculated by multiplying amp-hours by volts. Higher Wh generally means more stored energy and can support farther riding, but it is not a direct miles-per-Wh conversion or a range guarantee; a larger battery also adds weight. Compare candidate bikes on the same commute and assumptions rather than ranking them by advertised maximum miles. Battery capacity is one part of the decision: motor efficiency and the assist levels you will actually use affect how quickly energy is consumed. Also weigh battery weight, charging convenience, and whether the bike’s system supports an auxiliary battery.

Leave room for real-world variation
Do not plan a commute around the calculator’s best-case result or the bike’s advertised maximum. Choose a setup with practical breathing room for ordinary changes in weather, load, route, and battery condition over time. The official guidance cited here does not establish one universal reserve percentage, so avoid treating any single percentage as a rule for every bike and commute.

A compatible range extender can add flexibility if the bike otherwise suits you but its practical range is slightly short. Trek’s US range-extender page describes system-specific examples: it says PowerMore 250 adds an average estimated 40 miles, and describes a TQ HPR extender as providing up to 44% more range. These are Trek’s product-page estimates, not universal outcomes; Trek also notes that actual range varies with multiple factors. See Trek’s range extender information.

Before choosing one, confirm compatibility with the exact bike and drive system, mounting arrangement, added weight, and whether it uses space you need for a bottle cage. The existence of Trek examples does not mean every Trek or other-brand bike supports an extender.
