Le Monde’s October 2024 investigation reported that publicly shared Strava activities and identifiable profiles associated with members of leaders’ security details exposed location and movement clues. It did not report evidence that Strava’s servers had been hacked. The exposure came from what users shared publicly and how their profiles could be identified.
What Le Monde found
Le Monde reported that journalists used publicly visible exercise activities and identifiable Strava profiles linked to security personnel to infer locations and movement patterns associated with protected leaders. Repeated activity patterns can reveal more than a single workout: taken together, they may help observers infer trips and places connected to the people being protected.
In its French-language reporting, Le Monde said it had cross-referenced more than 100 movements in the French case since 2015. That is the newsroom’s account of its investigation, not a count of every movement by every member of a security detail.
This was a privacy and operational-security exposure through public activity sharing—not evidence, in the reporting cited here, of a Strava database breach. The distinction matters: the concern was that publicly available activity and profile information could be pieced together, not that an attacker had broken into Strava’s systems.

What the Secret Service said
In October 2024, the Associated Press reported that the U.S. Secret Service said affected personnel had been notified. AP quoted the agency: “We do not assess that there were any impacts to protective operations or threats to any protectees,” The no-impact assessment was the agency’s stated judgment; it was not an independent verification by AP or Le Monde.
What the 2026 follow-up adds
In a 2026 follow-up, Le Monde said its newsroom had tracked a significant portion of French military personnel on Strava for more than two years. Its headline put the reported reach at 18,000 French military personnel. Treat that figure as the investigation’s reported reach, not as a verified count of all French military personnel or all Strava users.

How to limit what other people can see on Strava
Strava’s help guidance describes separate controls for activity visibility and map visibility. Changing one does not automatically accomplish the other.
Choose who can view activity details
Strava lists three activity-visibility options: Everyone, Followers, and Only You. Choose the audience appropriate to the activity; if the goal is to prevent other Strava users from viewing its details, select Only You. Profile visibility is a separate setting worth reviewing as well.

Hide map portions or the full activity map
Map-visibility controls can hide portions around an activity’s start or end, or hide the full activity map from other viewers. Hiding a map portion does not make the activity itself private: viewers may still see activity details depending on its visibility setting. Strava also cautions that other information can allow someone to deduce a location that has been hidden on the map.
Check defaults, then review each setting
As of October 4, 2026, Strava’s help center says new accounts default profile and activity visibility to Everyone. It also says that, when logging in through the app, the first and last 200 meters of future activity maps are hidden by default. Defaults may change, so check the current settings in your account rather than relying on what was selected when the account was created.

Review connected services separately
Strava says its map-visibility settings are not passed to authorized third-party services connected to an account. If activity data is also sent to another service, review that connection and the destination service’s own privacy controls. A Strava map-hiding choice does not control what a connected service receives or displays.
